And you thought being a Terraforming Engineer would be a quiet life compared to being a Space Marine? Blasting rocks to make way for new settlements on Tyrian seemed like a quiet life, but your long-time Huzundra friend is now dead - bless his lizard hide. Murdered! And obviously Microsol, the Terraforming company wants you dead too! It's that huge new rock formation you and Buce uncovered - it's Gravitium, and it's priceless. Tyrian is the only planet where it exists in commercial quantities, and Microsol are determined to control it. You can expect them to throw all their resources against you - and they won't pull any punches.

Defining "classic" games

I played it when it first came out and over the years I've played it on and off. Doesn't sound like much, but how many other games can you really say that for? Other "classics" have come and gone but I rarely feel the urge to play them, but I keep on coming back to Tyrian like an old friend. The graphics were great for the time, scalable to your machine of course, but the high-end machines of the time made this a very pretty game indeed. The story and humour of the game are also top-notch: not too over the top and childish, but enough to make you smirk and maybe even giggle every so often. The game is a basic vertical scrolling shooter, but the myriad of different weapons, especially the "rare" weapons like the banana blaster, plus upgrades, increased the replayability to astronomical heights. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to indulge in some nostalgia...

Just Awesome

I played this game many years ago with a friend. Its an really cool vertical shooter. It has many upgrades and many weapons. You can play the classic mode where you need to pick up the weapons or an other mode where you collect money and you can buy your weapons and ship upgrades.

Going for a full set of levels...again

The kind of shooter that I enjoy, this game was the only one who managed to give me the same kind of chills that I got from witnessing the Super Nashwan Power in Xenon 2. However, the overkill that is manages to present does not mean you are guaranteed to succeed (many times did I die when I thought it was a given) and the presented back story, while not of Shakespearean worth, more than fulfills its role of conveying what is going on and also adding that extra color that makes a universe worthy to know (rather impressive if you take into account that this is all done via holocubes that you get access to).

Classic SHMUP Title

Tyrian: The game that first got me into the SHMUP genre as a child. This is the definitive collection of the game and GOG has done a wonderful job making sure it works flawlessly on newer systems. Tyrian still holds up really nicely too in comparison to today's SHMUPS. Epic Megagames did it right the first time, and this game is living proof of it. I've played many games in the genre from Ikaruga to Radiant Silvergun to DoDonPachi to even more obscure titles like Border Down and nothing can quite compare to this original. It has it all: Beautiful sprite graphics, awesomely detailed backgrounds, killer soundtrack, a HUGE number of weapons to equip on your ship (including different firing modes based on how upgraded they are), and even a gripping storyline (if you decide to pay attention). Truly one of the best SHMUPS out there, Tyrian allows you to customize your ship the way you like it in between levels and also allows you to adjust difficulty (including game speed) on the fly if things get too easy/hard. Challenging, but not unforgivably so, Tyrian will keep you coming back for more, from collecting every last bit of the DATA Drops to finding all the secret levels it's a joy from start to finish and is hard to put down.
