And you thought being a Terraforming Engineer would be a quiet life compared to being a Space Marine? Blasting rocks to make way for new settlements on Tyrian seemed like a quiet life, but your long-time Huzundra friend is now dead - bless his lizard hide. Murdered! And obviously Microsol, the Terraforming company wants you dead too! It's that huge new rock formation you and Buce uncovered - it's Gravitium, and it's priceless. Tyrian is the only planet where it exists in commercial quantities, and Microsol are determined to control it. You can expect them to throw all their resources against you - and they won't pull any punches.

Everyone Should Have This

I had a really fun time with Tyrian 2000. It's a vertical shooter game that lets you upgrade your ship between levels along with occasional branching paths depending on if you match certain criteria in some levels. The better your guns are, the more your ship will heat up, requiring that you find a careful balance between firepower and energy to cool everything down. You're not restricted to beating everything in one sitting, as you can save and load between missions. I don't have much else to say! I liked the music, I liked the graphics, the weapon upgrades encouraged me to experiment with a variety of bullet types, and I liked just how much "game' there is. You're not gonna be finishing this in an afternoon. The story isn't anything special, but it's fine enough for getting you from point A to point B. The game is also completely free! If you're at all interested in playing this or have an interest in vertical shooters, try it.

Part of myself

Honestly, if the words "Good Old Game" means something, it must be Tyrian :) Tyrian is the peak full glory of the pre 3D 90s gaming, of big pixels and synthetized music. Tyrian is one of those games that I've been playing since I discovered it, and that was like 15 years ago. From a 486 to an i7, and it keeps bringing me great memories and sensations of childhood and rainy sundays gaming. Thanks folks, maybe this is a very personal and subjetive review, but I couldn't resist. And all of you, play it, enjoy it, because this is gaming history, alive, and free.

Thought I had played them all

I played many DOS shooters back in the day , Raptor, Galactix, Major Stryker , but this one really is fun to play. Its not Raiden or R-TYPE by any means, but its unique and has smooth yet reasonable graphics. It says you could use a Gamepad, but I had to unplug mine after the game kept going to the lower right of the corner like it was stuck. But thankfully you can use the mouse to control the ship. I cannot really comment about others saying the game was open source as I have never played this in my entire life before, but for a freebie, its worth it to check this game out.

The definitive top-down space shooter

Tyrian 2000 is everything it needs to be. It is challenging, customizable, it looks and sounds fantastic, controls well, and has more levels than you can shake a stick at, including a lot of secret levels and a few silly bonus rounds. I once sat down and played it for around 6 hours a day for a week straight. I still didn't reach the end. It even has a local co-op mode where you have the ability to dock P1 and P2's ships so that one flies while the other shoots. What else could you possibly want?!

EPIC

This game was already free a while back...but who cares? I think it's a great addition to GOG, especially since it's the best 2D shooters from back in the days of DOS. It even supported 2 player co-op on the same computer! Pure win. GOG, you are awesome!!!!
