This top-down Action-Adventure stars a turnip who is as adorable as he is awful, and that's part of its charm. You explore a charming world, fighting enemies and solving puzzles. Nothing gets super deep or intricate, which might turn some off, but on the other hand, you never have to stare down every little pixel to find some super obtuse secret. The story does take some interesting turns, though, and the scenery does an interesting job of tying into that. Just lean into it and have some fun!
Five stars is perhaps generous given this is easily one of the weirdest games I've ever played... but it was almost one of the most fun. I bought it on a whim to play with my nephew and was surprised at how hilarious and therapeutic it was bobbing around as a cheerful, psychopathic turnip whacking things with various garden implements. Without spoiling the story I'll say it has a silly but engrossing COVID/post-apocalyptic plotline, so it feels like pandemic-fatigue-therapy. The controls were super simple, the fetch quests enjoyable, and the bosses were challenging without being too difficult for an amateur like myself (except Liz the Mutated Human whose afterlife is hopefully filled with pain and suffering for what she put me through).
It took me 3hrs40mins to get 97% completion (at my usual snail speed) so it's by no means a long game, but I actually liked being able to play it through in one sitting. For the sale price (3.50) it was an absolute bargain and the final bonus train level adds a bunch of content that I didn't bother to finish but probably would have run me another hour.
If you like ruining peoples' lives, spreading toxic waste and ripping up important documents without any consequences whatsoever - all set to a chipper score - then this is the game for you! It may be short, but I guarantee you'll have a hard time keeping a smile off your face throughout.
I should preface by saying I played this on Xbox One and haven't tried it on PC, but
I usually stay away from 2d experiences in general but the title being hilarious and the fact that it was free on GamePass pushed me over the ledge, and I'm glad it did. The game took me a few hours to beat, which seems a little light for the $15 price point here on GOG.
I think somewhere around $5 is the sweet point to pick this game up at, unless you've really been itching for that top-down Legend of Zelda nostalgia. The combat is simple, and the writing is entertaining. Definitely had a couple of unexpected laugh out loud moments.
Short and sweet. No depth in combat, but it was still very satisfying. There's a "they don't make it like this anymore" vibe to it.
Amazing dialogue, jokes and running gags everywhere you turn in this cozy yet acid world. It's that Earthbound'ish slapstick.
Really recommend for those who like a short and memorable experience between bigger games.
