Customize your palace at will and give election speeches from your balcony, to win the favor of your subjects.
Having played every Tropico, 4 is the sweet spot between humour, gameplay and price. In 4, all the game elements have been invented, and the humour is still present. In 5 and 6, they add a few minor technical elements, but lose the humour which peaked in 3.
Get 3, get 4, but 5 and 6 didn't really go anywhere from there.
The visuals and graphics of Tropico 6 are clearly the best in the series. For me however that's as far as my praise goes. Previously I have enjoed the campaign style of play in Tropico, but in 6 I find the gameplay tedious, repetitive and boring. There is no campaign, Just a series of standalone missions that do not lead into each other, so you end up repeatedly having to research the same edicts and buy the same bulding blueprints in each mission, time after time. I got fed up with it. Your starting towns also tend to be quite largely constructed at the outset too, much more so than in previous versions, so that takes away the fun of setting up a layout for yourself and building up from small beginnings. The quirky humour that characetersied the faction leaders is all gone. Demands from factions are now just cold irritations and obstructions that encourage immediate closure
I have played Tropico 1 and 3-6, and I think this is by far the best in the series!
It has the best of Tropico 4 (including the re-introduction of election speeches, which was a feature that was absent from Tropico 5 for some reason) and 5 (like the Tropican constitution, research, and era progression). It also has a bunch of other features that were never done in the series before, such as advanced transportation services, being able to play in an archipelago instead of one big island, and The Broker, which is the person to turn to if you want to spend your Swiss bank account money as well as giving you tasks to add on to your Swiss bank account. Also, the graphics and music were great.
Of course, I have to admit that it is a bit difficult than the previous games, which is off-putting for casual gamers, but if you play your cards right, then you will have a good time. Other than that, I find Tropico 6 to be a refreshing entry in the series.
(Note: I originally bought this game on Steam when it first came out, but then re-purchased it and "The Llama of Wall Street" DLC here, because I already own Tropico 1-5, which I purchased from here).
I really enjoy this series. I have 3-6 and enjoy all of them. This outing is pretty and has some new game mechanics that I feel add to the fun. As always it is a challenge to create and maintain a functional economy while keeping the populace happy enough to not throw you out of office, or to be the brutally effective dictator who brings them prosperity despite the resistance ;) If you like nation building, and the challenges that come with it, this is a game worthy of consideration.
I needed a second attempt to this game to fully appreciate it. My first attempt treated it like one of many economic simulators, where 'it's all economy, stupid'.
Tropico 6 is however much more political than you'd expect from a game about dictatorship. The scenarios show the depth of the game and allow you to learn how the Tropican society works. Many reviewers complain about random requests from factions that you need to tend to - but splash screen advice fro the creators says - you do not have to meet most of the requests. It is an interesting game, teaching you that a good manger has to sometimes (often) say "no" - and in this sense it is brilliantly political.
The sandbox playgame is a little bit uneventful and easy - but I have not yet tried it with the hardest settings.
