Trine 5: A Clockwork Conspiracy

Continuing the series, Trine 5 will please any and all Trine fans and puzzle game enjoyers alike. There are actually several new abilities never before seen in the series, leading to even more devious puzzles. Actually found myself stuck for a while a couple times, because with the sheer amount of options you have in the late game, it can take a bit to land on the one needed to solve the puzzle. However, they went a little overboard with the skill tree upgrades. Especially Amadeus, when fully upgraded, can easily cheese a very large portion of the game. The ability to join objects together, being able to lock their rotation, reverse gravity and the ability to have up to 6 objects conjured at the same time is outright ridiculous. It's nice that the upgrades are noticeable, but this one character becomes so powerful as far as puzzles go, I'd actually consider it too much. Found myself multiple times in the late game going "Damn, this puzzle has me stumped, do I try to find the intended solution or just attempt to somehow cheese it with Amadeus? The possibility of cheesing it being there was quite often simply too tempting, and not that difficult to do. But other than that, the game is still great. Charming art style, awesome music,, smooth controld, diverse levels and locations, passable story (although a slightly disappointing ending as far as the main villains go). One of the best puzzle/platformer games out there. Took me about 20 hours to finish and do all the achievements.

We're currently half-way through the game in local co-op and having a blast! If you enjoyed Trine 4 and wanted more, this is it. We've been playing the Trine games since the first one and feel like this is the best one yet - the levels are beautiful, the puzzles are interesting without being too obtuse or frustrating, the new abilities introduced are a lot of fun and create alternate ways to solve the puzzles, the combat is better than ever and we just finished an awesome boss fight (and that's not something I expected to ever say about Trine), and there's still occasional the feeling of breaking some puzzles (like you solved it in a way that probably wasn't intended) that's still delightful. New in Trine 5 are fun new abilities for Amadeus and Pontius, special sections in levels that feature just one of the characters where you get those fun new abilities, and player customization options (selectable outlines, outfits, hats, and backpacks) that help differentiate your characters to make it easier to tell who is who in multiplayer. Only negatives so far are that the main menu is still kind of confusing (I don't know what the difference is between "Local Singleplayer" and "Local Multiplayer" given that additional players can seemingly jump into the game at any point and puzzles scale accordingly), and the Amadeus idle animation on the level map screen looks off and weird to me. But this feels like nitpicking about a great game.

Another excellent installment in the TRINE series with the usual mix of puzzles and action, a healthy dose of chaos and the beautiful soundtrack and visuals that are a staple of the franchise.
