Description
This game was clearly made with passion. You can see the proof of this almost everywhere. The 2D environments are colorful and enchanting, gameplay feels smooth and polished, not to mention the absolutely huge and very diversified world in which you can spend many hours just exploring. Treasure Adventure Game casts you in the role of a young boy who lands on an island that is a fragment of what was once a continent, destroyed in the war between a demon and a wizard. You accept quests, travel across the oceans, and generally have a bang-up time of being a little boy in a big world, out there looking for treasure and adventure. Your equipment consists of a hat, a parrot, and a boat that appears whenever you touch water. Combine those with the basic platforming abilities like jumping and crawling that you’re familiar with from every platforming game ever, and you’ve got the basics of a phenomenal romp across a huge world filled with treasure, maps, secrets, danger, and triumph.

The music changes with the environments and day-night cycles, enhancing the feel the game is evoking and making you feel immersed in the world as you travel through it. The game has a retro feel, yes, but you really have to see it for yourself to understand what Treasure Adventure Game brings to the table. Since it’s free, of course, there is simply no reason not to!

Treasure Adventure Game was created by Stephen Orlando. He spent over 2 years of his life developing it. When you see the scope and detail in this game, it’s hard to believe that it was created by just one guy. But it was! So if you like it, head over to his website and break that donate button!
  • Huge, open, and highly interactive world to explore and a very interesting story to experience.
  • Very diversified environments with changing weather and NPCs that are not static but living their lives.
  • Beautiful music, composed by Robert Ellis, that changes with the background and creates a very unique and enchanting mood.

A little, but free, treasure!

+ This game is FREE + Cozy graphics and music + Collecting hats doesn't require any $$$ +- Interesting idea, but at the same time gameplay feel like MANY other platformer-adventure games -+ Get's harder really quick and sometimes you wish there were an option to save the game anytime you want - Doesn't encourage to complete it in 100% - Minor bugs, I had also one crash while playing, but it's nothing serious that would keep you from finishing a game Treasure Adventure Game is overlooked by many players, but there are reasons for it. As far as I know, this game is only available here on GOG.com, and since it's free to play you could give it a try. It's a game made back when almost every Indie game had a "soul" and if you can overcome some things, I'm sure you will have a great time playing it. Maybe it's not even close to my list of my favorites, but I'm glad I had a chance to discover and run this game.

Better than Windwaker by far

Reasons why Treasure Adventure Game is better than Windwaker: -Price: If you want to play Windwaker, you gotta buy a Nintendo console, which is at least $100, and then you gotta buy the game, which is probably $50? If you're reading this review you've probably got a computer that can play TAG, and you can have it for FREE. -Sailing: Sailing is TEDIOUS and BORING in Windwaker, because they put barely any islands in their massive grid of ocean, and most of the islands have exactly one use before becoming things you need to just bypass to get to the important parts. In TAG, sailing is only a brief moment from one island to the next, and nearly every island has lots of useful stuff on it. PLUS, in Windwaker warping is nearly useless as an alternative to sailing, while in TAG warping is available fairly early in the game, and lets you go to ANY island even faster than sailing! -Content: Windwaker has a grand total of FIVE dungeons. FIVE. Majora's Mask is the only Zelda with less. Five is less than Minish Cap has, and people complain about THAT game being too short. On the other hand, TAG has at least 7 dungeons, depending on what you're willing to classify as a dungeon, and at least that many bosses. -Completionist-friendly: TAG doesn't have any awful "take pictures of everything in the game" sidequest to torment completionists. TAG has a handy percentage to let you know how much you've done in the game, and lets you go all the way up to 100%+. Better still, the few frustrating things to do or find in the game are completely unnecessary to getting that 100%+. AND, unlike Windwaker, TAG actually REWARDS the player with something MEANINGFUL for getting all of the things. -Companion: A parrot who only talks when you ask him to is much better than a psychic boat who always butts in when you're in the middle of trying to solve a puzzle. -Tragic backstory: Link never has a tragic backstory [citation needed]. TAG's main character has all kinds of tragedy in his past.

I don't know if Metroidvania is for me

I'm not an expert in Metroidvania games; this seemed like a good one to dip my toe. TAG is super-cute & is what I was looking for: tons of secret treasures. When you get new items, it unlocks all kinds of new things in old areas. The game is cute and simple to learn, and the setting is just fun. There are fun puzzles everywhere, and I feel pretty clever when I figure them out (but see 1 below). So why am I not sure I want to get into MetroidVania games, based on this game: 1) Periods where I'm not sure what to do next. Am I just missing an item that was hidden 10 screens ago, or am I have I just not figured it out yet? If I guess correctly, the game will be fun (although see below), but if I guess wrongly... I'm going to waste like God knows how much time of my life doing something completely pointless, then check the Internet and find out what I need to do 2) Time wasting: Why does the character walk so slowly?! It takes too long to get alllll the way across the map for the next part of the game, or to return to an earlier area to find more secrets. I'm spending half my time walking through areas I've already beaten. Also, the game has a day/night cycle that is pointless. There's nothing to do to change the time except just wait. Like leave-the-window-open-and-surf-the-Internet-for-a-while-wait. Finally, there's the jumpy parts. Oops, I timed a jump slightly wrong; now I have to do this whole damn part over again 3) Am I just bad at video games? The first boss I ran into (sewer monster) seems insanely difficult. I watched a video online and found a few exploits that help hugely, but still haven't beaten it. Why should I need cheesy exploits to win a game? When the monster's coming out of the ground at me, I don't have enough time to escape (see 2). You know what else would help me at beating this boss? More hearts. Like the heart you get from beating this boss. Maybe this is just my lack of patience. Also, the 2nd boss (stone spiky face thing) wasn't as hard

At least it's free...

I really wanted to like this game since it has so many good reviews, but it was very difficult to play since it took me a while to figure out the controls. Once I got past the beginning, I found it to be frustrating to play and not very intuitive. That being said, I didn't find any bugs and the game is free so I can't complain too much. I'm glad other people enjoyed this game, but it just wasn't for me.
