Poorly made but has potential

We all know it. OpenTTD could need a modern revival. Is that Transport Fever? The answer is 'Perhaps'. The base game is good. The player is tasked with creating a transport empire. The graphics and attention to detail is good. BUT, a lot of less good details detracts from an otherwise good experience. Long loading times and loss of FPS is a few. Very small and sometimes dumb UI is another. Strange simulation logic and a lot more makes this a less good game from what it could have been. I hope the devs address these issues very soon. In time it could go from OK to great. Time will tell. At the current time I would hold off since the game is only passable, I'm sad to say. I wonder who playtested this before release (if at all). Why spend so much time doing a game and then ignore so obvious issues before release? Oh, one good thing is that it has support for Linux. Sad however the rest probably means it becomes a less good member of the Linux gaming family (for now). The keyword here is 'Potential' IF (and only if) the devs care enough.

Trainspotters delight

A good sandbox model train game without the expense of a room in the house to put it in. The graphics are good, the trains themselves look excellent, the board the equivalent of a Spartan table top painted green with some brocolli spilling out. I understand the precious resources of the computer divided in a way to give a dynamically alive feeling to the game so the limited terrain is not a huge disappointment. Again quite possibly a system resource issue but I have taken a point for the brief campaign challenges, particulary in lieu of their being no other form of competition in the game. It would have been nice akin to 'Railroad Tycoon 3' to compete against like minded business automatons, or at least have a diverse campaign that challenges the player against the strategic narsicism of the developer. Stilll very nice to see a steam train wait at a signal for the points to clear to continue it's journey full of 19th century twits.

A hard-won gem

This game is beautiful! Each mission will pose a specific challenge, and one inspired by history, no less. One time you are tasked with crossing mountainous terrain with trains that lack traction. Another time it's a bendy river valley and high speed trains that can't do sharp turns. Or massively subsidized air travel. Or just crossing a vast distance, or connecting a complicated network of businesses and people. Transport Fever is beautiful when you are figuring out these systems. I greatly appreciate the historical background, and the realistic scale of these missions, which no other game seems to be able to pull off quite as well. I just wish its UI was less clunky and the graphics a bit nicer.

My Favorite Game

Been waiting 20 years for a Transport Tycoon / Locomotion replacement. This is different but satisfies the itch. The Mod community is outstanding and keeps it updated and fresh. The detail of the cities and vehicles are most impressive. I just love making the routes and watching the trains run. Watch a few Colonel Failure videos on Youtube to see what it's like. Highly recommended.

This Game is Good but Flawed

Overall, Transport Fever offers what a transport based game requires. Multiple types of freight and multiple options to transport the freight. However, the major problem this game has is balance. Especially when it comes to the prices and upkeep between trains and everything else. For trains, not only do you have to purchase and pay upkeep for the locomotives but also the carts that are used to transport the freight. The problem is that the upkeep required for these carts are far more than trucks/busses when compared to speed and amount of freight that the carts/trucks/busses can haul. This is the same for planes. This means that until the very late game, trains are completely inferior to the other options when it comes to earning money. Yes, trucks/busses are far slower... but the cash rolls in MUCH easier than with trains, which defies logic. If these issues were fixed then I would highly recommend this game. However, considering other transport-based game options, this game isn't worth the price.
