Townscaper is an experimental passion project. More of a toy than a game. Pick colors from the palette, plop down colored blocks of houses on the irregular grid, and watch Townscaper's underlying algorithm automatically turn those blocks into cute little houses, arches, stairways, bridges, and lush backyards, depending on their configuration.
The colours are beautiful, and the concept is overall soothing. It is very effective at what it offers. If you buy this game with the proper expectations, you will likely be very satisfied. The creators are transparent about this being more of a toy than a game.
Personally, I lost interest rather quickly. While I did not expect gameplay or goals, I did hope for more variety in the building features. It became redundant after 15-20 minutes.
That being said, I may not have been the target audience. if you want something simple and calming, this may be for you!
This game is very simple, the game just has basic move controls and you click on a colour then a space to build thats it but at the same time its got this "i wonder if i do this" feel to it because the buildings adjust themselves as you add new sections automatically adding stilts, spires, platforms etc as you build its also a very calming time.
Townscaper is a very sweet and relaxing outlet for your creativity. You can create your own beautiful towns just by picking a colour and clicking, and the way that houses just pop into existence with a happy little plop makes me smile :)
You can move the sun so you can control what side the light comes from, and also move it down for a sunset/sunrise feel, and even turn it into nighttime, which makes the windows of the houses light up.
There are handy undo and redo buttons that can remember quite a lot of moves you've made. I didn't test the limit but so far I have been able to click undo 250+ times and it has been able to go back that far and still remember and it can redo it all again if you change your mind again.
You can build really really high up, up to 256 floors.
You can easily set the screenshot folder to save where ever you want it to save instead of having to go look for where it saves like with many other games, and an easy to reach screenshot button too.
The towns you make can be saved as well, so you can continue working on an old town even after starting a new one.
If you want you can show the grid that's under the water. That way you can tell what shape things might get depending on where you place things.
It's a quiet and serene game with the gentle sound of waves to keep you company while you unwind to the beauty that is Townscaper!
I adore this little "Game" that is not really a game. There is no money or economy. No monsters to kill. No goals whatsoever. Just... Build.
I find this to be one of the most relaxing little games I've ever played. You just build and build and build. A nice mindless little distraction from, everything. Sometimes I just jump in for 15 minutes or so and sometimes I just get lost in it for hours.
The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is because I see some room for improvement. Maybe the option to start with all flat ground instead of water. Or being able to build up more than one small tile at a time, but then again, the latter might remove the charm of the game... The eyes glazed over charm of it.
I've been a GoG member for quite a while now, and this is the first game I've seen fit to review. I really like this little builder.
The game itself is very relaxing and what it promises to be. What I really dislike about it is that you cannot really set different hotkeys or allow dragging - means you have to click on by one with the mouse which can get exhausting rather quickly. The idea is great, the atmosphere really beautiful and relaxing, all it lacks is practical usability. Please add more hotkey options and a way to build without killing the mouse, thank you!
