While investigating the disappearance of twin girls at Winterlake, something terrible happens to Caroline Walker. Waking in the dead of night, naked and hooked up to some kind of outdated medical equipment in a bathtub, Caroline must fight for her life as she explores the halls of the abandoned mansion.
A Nod to the Classics
Tormented Souls draws inspiration from classic survival horror like From Resident Evil, Silent Hill, and Alone in the Dark. A modern take on the fixed-perspective action-adventure game, Tormented Souls offers a modernised control scheme and dynamic camera combined with classic gameplay.
Deadly Combat
Dark forces and unspeakable horrors will do everything in their power to stop Caroline getting to the truth. Use anything and everything that you can find to fight back against evils lurking in the darkness.
Keep Your Wits About You
You'll need much more than a steady aim and sharp reflexes to make it out alive. Search the environment for anything you can use to your advantage. Combine items to solve twisted puzzles and use every resource available to explore the secrets of the mansion and its grounds.
Fiendish Puzzles
Scavenge essential resources and tools, decipher clues from long-forgotten journals, and combine it all to solve fiendish puzzles and get to the bottom of the mansion's sordid history.
Another Dimension
Nothing is quite as it seems at Winterlake. Mirrors provide a path to an alternate reality and another place in time. By crossing these shimmering gateways, Caroline can manipulate the very fabric of reality in surprising ways.
You Are Not Alone In the Dark
The mansion may seem abandoned, but as Caroline investigates its secrets, dark forces and unspeakable horrors will do everything in their power to stop her getting to the truth. Be sure to be alert at all times, and use anything you can find to fight off the encroaching terrors of Winterlake. Just remember: gaze into the darkness, and it also gazes into you...
Can Caroline Walker discover the truth and escape with her life?

Turns out, you cannot use keyboard/mouse layouts for this game. Apparently, this is a feature called 'tank controls' which this game type is designed for. Basically, you have no real option other than to use a console style controller. A shame, because the game looks really good, but as someone who has only ever used keyboard/mouse (since 1999, when Unreal Tournament came out, so 26 years!), it's a deal breaker for me. If you're used to an analogue controller, give this game a go.
The suspense of wondering when I'll lose a chunk of progress and have to do a bunch of stuff all over again, that is. You see, in order to save at a given point, you have to put a tape in a recorder. Trouble is, tapes are very sporadic. Then, once found, you gotta traipse all the way back to the recorder. Because they're not easy to come by (especially if you overlook them since you have to pixel hunt), it's best to use them sparingly so that you'll have one available when desperately needed. I noticed health syringes weren't too plentiful, either.
OK, yes, this does absolutely infuse the game with a sense of consequence, and it still beats the hell out of perma-death, I suppose. Apparently, the makers set out to recreate the aura of playing games like the original Resident Evil and Silent Hill, right down to the tank controls and pre-rendered backgrounds. They succeeded in spades, but, I coulda done without this wonky save system as I hate, HATE having to do things over again. If I had known this, I believe I wouldn't have bought the game. I found out by playing, and playing, and playing, wondering why there were no check-points, then, coming across a tape and learning that was my save, should I choose to use it.
Notice, however, that I give this game 5 stars. Because the graphics, lighting, atmosphere, the way the story unwinds, is awesome. It really gives me the same creepy feeling as I had playing Silent Hill 2 PC port over 20 years ago, a game I thoroughly enjoyed even if I hated the control scheme. So, I'm going to continue playing until I hit a wall (I've done OK so far). I highly recommend this game for fans of old school console survival horror.
This game is unbelievably good. The atmosphere is absolutely great. For those who love Silent Hill and other atmospheric mysterious games it is a gem. I was really surprised by this game. Of course it is a very budget-restricted game, but nevertheless the developers managed to create a true work of art. Caroline history really touches you. There are only few games that provide such immersive and tense story.
So, I can recommend Tormented Souls to anyone, who seeks for immersive gameplay, interesting story, impressive horror and great sountrack.
Yes, the game soundtrack is awesome!
I waited a very, very long time for this one to come on a big enough sale. It was well worth the wait.
This game knows its audience, as well as its genre. Without altering any of the settings, you can experience an incredibly difficult, confusing, and frightening game or, if you're like me and love spoilers, you can go on a gleeful rampage from the get-go. This game, unlike certain other Survival Horror staples I could name, doesn't get in the way of a good time regardless.
My complaints are few, and I suspect they stem mostly from the challenges of independent development. The enemies get a bit repetitive, I don't find 'That One Enemy' all that intmimdating, and I've found an odd rhythm to the combat, which I suspect was not an intentional one.
I also find the character modles a little too unrealistic to fit in with their hyper-realistic surroundings, but that's just down to taste.
I'm gushing, but then again I got this on sale for $0.99 down from $20, so it would have had to try to irritate me. Still, I've already recommended it to one horror-loving buddy.
