Basic ARPG with a few good ideas
To start, my usual disclaimer that I am a picky gamer and I have probably played ARPGs and FPS games to the point of saturation. I won't list all the hack-n-slash games I have played over the years but I will state that something truly unique or memorable has to be on display for me to warrant a play through and a good score. Having said that, I will start off with the good ideas Torchlight presents. First and foremost, the inventory management is very good and the addition of having a pet run to town to buy/sell items so as to not stop the flow of gameplay is an excellent idea. The game is pretty clear on explaining items/skills. As for the game itself, the story is basic, bordering on non-existent. The enemies and environments all look like a bland pastel colored past that gets boring quickly. The combat and skills don't really come of as being exciting or interesting. Despite having some end-game content, replayability is lacking because you don't really become attached to anything in this game. The story and game world are generic. The combat is ok but nothing special. The loot was ok but like any ARPG you would have to grind to get very good items and frankly there is no reason to commit a lot of time to this game. Overall I would say that if you are new to the genre then this would be a decent starting point. Anyone else who has experience in ARPGs should skip this game. My overall subjective rating for this game is as follows: 1 star for the inventory management. 1 start for being a streamlined experience in what can often be a complex web.
