Torchlight has old school roots but still feels fresh and current. The game may seem simple but it's still very addictive.

Throwback to Diablo
This is an excellent game to get your start if you have never played an ARPG. This is a good throwback to Diablo, minus the more gothic vibe of Diablo. While the graphics may be a bit too cartoony for some, I think the graphics are a strength and have helped this game age well visually compared to many other contemporaries in this genre. The story is very standard. Wizard seeks magical object, gets corrupted, you try to stop him. Friend gets changed into an evil monster, you kill him, and now you are on your way to loot and hack and slash heaven. Now I will say the voice acting in my opinion is very good, albeit with some hokey and standard 'RPG Trope' lines. The game sound and music is also a big plus with some great music that sounds very 'Diablo-esque'. (Considering most of this development team are from the team that brought us Diablo). The gameplay is fast paced, the enemies are plentiful and killing things is satisfying. And the loot. My God the loot. You get a lot of it. Everything in the inventory only takes up one slot, so no more inventory Tetris here. That's really my biggest complaint. You get just oodles and oodles of loot. You'll get a few levels in and your inventory will be inundated with weapons, armor, jewels, and magical items and the like. With this game it's more about which items you want to keep, not what you need to get. Again if you don't mind the ludicrous amount of loot and the somewhat cartoony graphics, this is a good ARPG with a decent enough story, satisfying gameplay great sound and music for any ARPG fan.

Surpassed by Torchlight 2
The game feels a lot like Diablo 1. There's 3 classes to choose from, 1 town and 1 dungeon you delve deeper and deeper into, all while fighting loads of enemies, grabbing items to sell and hoping one of the drops is a better item to equip. It plays fine and is a fine game, which by now should run decently on any computer. The controls are good and the powers that each class has brings enough variety to experiment with them. However, I don't see much reason to play this instead of Torchlight 2. The second game does everything better and also has multiplayer support

Better than Diablo.
I remember playing the predecessor of this game (Fate) long ago on my first laptop computer. It was a Diablo clone but it did a lot of things I liked better than Diablo such as giving you a pack animal you could send back to town alone to automatically sell off your unwanted loot. Fate was an ugly game though. I kept thinking as I played if it just looked a little better... Well then Torchlight came along and delivered everything I felt was lacking in Fate. Mainly a great art style. If you're looking for a Diablo experience on GOG this here is the best one I think you'll find. The only thing you could really criticize is the lack of multiplayer--they added that in Torchlight 2 but for me I only play PC games alone so just having a fun single player game is all I need. I did have a bit of trouble getting this to run in widescreen on Windows 10 but the Windows troubleshooting popped up after a while and using that I finally got Torchlight to save my widescreen settings. Now I'm whacking monsters and grinding loot on Windows 10 to my heart's content.

Just (almost) perfect
Just buy it and you will dig into the the game from the very start. Mechanics are gerat, the game is responsive and stays rewarding. The only (small) problem - it gets somehow repetitive but tons of loot keeps it interesting.
