I don't know if my actual age is making me get bored of anime style games, or seriously this game is really boring.
As others have said, the most of the time this is a visual novel, and then you have like 15 minutes of real action in every chapter, so you will actually read 1 hour of the plot and 15 minutes of real gameplay, I tried my best to beat the game but seriously, even when I like reading, I gave up after chapter 5.
Battles are good and the OSt is pretty good, the design of the characters is pretty good too, and also higher difficulty settings could be a challenge but, this game didn't grow on me.

"But son, we already have Persona at home."
This game = 'Persona at home'.
This game is pretty much a dungeon crawling action RPG in the style of (but far more simplified than) games in the modern Persona series. It takes place in a school but doesn't really involve any of the standard Japanese school tropes (clubs, festivals, studying, etc), and the Persona-isms it has (broad stat categories increased by in game actions, personal relationships) are highly watered down. Combat takes place in generally bland dungeons, but opts for an action oriented design as opposed to a turn based one.
The plot itself is the standard 'evil supernatural forces are trying to destroy the world' stuff you'd expect from this genre of game, but you never feel really connected to any of the characters or locations the way you are from better games of this genre. The gathering of the team and the story of how they first interact and grow with each other feels much more forced and awkward than with games from the Persona (or Trails of Cold Steel) series. It certainly has some of the more annoying Japanese high school JRPG tropes though (hot spring hijinks, OMG AN IDOL GOES TO MY SCHOOL!, etc).
About the only thing that saves it is the pretty tight gameplay and (always killer) Falcom soundtrack. For someone coming from other games of this style, you'll probably feel disappointed, but if you're a fan of Falcom stuff, you already know what you're getting into, though you'll probably also feel disappointed if you've already played through the various games in the Trails series.
This game is the first JRPG and Nihon Falcom's games I have ever played. But it made me become a fan of Nihon Falcom and JRPG in general. This game have many secrets and side stories or quests to discover. I have spent more than 100 hours to play this game and never get bored. I love this game. If this game have a sequel, I will buy it.
This game as a problem: it is good but there are many better games out there.
Everything in this game works: the characters are likeable, the combat system is good, the story is ok if somewhat unoriginal. Graphics are typical Nihon Falcom, which means they would have been great in the late 90s. The games formula does become somewhat repetitive after 40+ hours.
Problem is, there are so many games out there that do things better. But if you have finished all the Persona and final fantasy games, are through with the witcher series and know all the Bioware classics in and out and are just itching for another JRPG, give this one a try.
