I enjoyed this game so much, that I would blindly buy a follow-up title. It has the RPG-like epic storytelling while challenging me in creative ways to always learn a new way to play the card game.
Even typing about it makes me realize, that I would like to do a re-run.
I used to dream about a single player card game with good gameplay, beautiful art, amazing soundtrack, captivating story... Thronebreaker is that dream come true. It was engaging from the very beginning, made me connect with all the characters and inspired me to explored every bit of every map. Battles were always interesting and allowed me plenty of room to experiment and try out different cards and tactics.
The toughest part of the game weren't the battles or puzzles, but the moral decisions I was forced to make. They genuinely made me feel the weight of responsibility; some of their consequences I won't ever be able to forget!
Simply put: An amazing journey. Thank you Thronebreaker.
Thronebreaker is such a fun card game within the world of Sapkowski's Witcher. You travel the world, gathering resources throught the war torn land any trying to retake your realm. Narative is grim and lighthearted at the same time and there is pleanty of story choises to pick from.
The only downside are some of the puzzles, which bring the game to hold until you figure out the proper order (albeit most of them are side missions). Same thing with picking the less of two evils, most of the time you are not deciding between good or bad. Just bad and worse. Where most of your decisions bite you in the ass in the long run. Which could be quite draining if there is no right answer.
Yet I had a good time with this game and looking forward to another single player Gwent game from this universe.
Familiar ambient sounds, calm & medieval music, amazing art style, and obviously a magnificent story-telling ; all those really make for an intriguing game that takes place in the captivating Witcher universe.
Regarding gameplay, the puzzles (unique card battles with special rules) are ingenious and require thinking ; the battles often revolve around a thought ahead strategy ; the game is also designed to change your available card pool once every chapter, forcing you to re-adapt your gameplan according to the "troops" at your disposal thus avoiding boredom ; the ressources are limited, so you must think before acquiring new buildings ; and choices matter : you might win or lose powerful allies depending on the choices you make along your journey.
If you wish to dive back into the Witcher universe with a relaxed, chill and story-oriented game, then give this one a try.
The trailer does not do this game justice. The story of this game is absolutely engaging. It's hard to tell which game had better storytelling, this or Baldur's Gate 2, it's that good.
Then there is card game, I liked it. Plenty of very different cards and challenges. Game graphics are not perfect and there are flaws, but they hold a consistency.
