About This War Of Mine:
In This War Of Mine you do not play as an elite soldier, rather a group of civilians trying to survive in a besieged city; struggling with lack of food, medicine and constant danger from snipers and hostile scavengers. The game provides an experience of war seen from an entirely new angle.
The pace of This War of Mine is imposed by the day and night cycle. During the day snipers outside stop you from leaving your refuge, so you need to focus on maintaining your hideout: crafting, trading and taking care of your survivors. At night, take one of your civilians on a mission to scavenge through a set of unique locations for items that will help you stay alive.
Make life-and-death decisions driven by your conscience. Try to protect everybody from your shelter or sacrifice some of them for longer-term survival. During war, there are no good or bad decisions; there is only survival. The sooner you realize that, the better.
This War of Mine - main features:
Inspired by real-life events
Control your survivors and manage your shelter
Craft weapons, alcohol, beds or stoves – anything that helps you survive
Make decisions - an often unforgiving and emotionally difficult experience
Randomized world and characters every time you start a new game
Charcoal-stylized aesthetics to complement the game's theme

I own this game on Steam but bought it here a second time as the devs offered to support the Red Cross with the earnings.
The game is pretty good. Most things are randomised wich makes for high replayability but also dampers with the difficulty. If you are into Survival Games and can grind your teeth around some setbacks and failure, give it a try!
When I first saw this title, I was browsing in GoG for some downtime entertainment. I recalled seeing the title and it hit me once again that this was more then the usual action/war-theme game. At first it looked "dark" and I left it at that. After I made the purchased, I actually left it alone for over a month--I did not want to touch it. I actually thought it has moral education value on life, liberty, and being grateful. All that was accomplished after surviving two 80 days, and a short-lived 20 days experiences.
Before I continue, I want to express that if one seeks the usual action genre wrapped in the disguise of a survival theme. This isn't that kind of "game". It is an experience that when played through an 80 days, moderate crime/violence level, a moderate winter that comes late and last moderately long survival experience will lead you to appreciate the depth and work put in by 11 Bit Studios. They did their work, and the message was felt--it hurts. It hurts that although I had a grasp of both game mechanics (combat and resource management, latter comprise of both physical and psychoemotional aspect), there is simply no winning like our typical war game. My group did survive since it was not my first rodeo with an 80 day campaign (look at that, using that word campaign reminded how Call Of Duty'ed out I am). In the end, they all survived, but just not what one would expect after getting into minimal confrontations that resulted in the use of fatal force, stealing from the defenseless, neglecting needs of neighbors, and holding onto resource beyond survival needs. If it has to be viewed as a game, then a hard game I will call it; however, if it is approached as an experience, it will open up your eyes. I will leave it at that.
The old saying that "pain is unavoidable, but suffering, is optional" may helped me to over come the first week. After I came across people asking for help; yet, I barely had enough resource to help my own group. Then and there, it hit me: it wasn't about my group, my goals, and I; rather, it was about surviving it all, together.
I consider myself as a humble person, who jokes and laughs, and yes, like Call of Duty style games (once in a while, finished COD MW 1 and 2, sad that Soap died). This War of Mine had more to offer then what meets the eye. As a pure game, the graphic depiction of 256 shades of grey and fine guitar, and often classical music we can recall (if one was build to enjoy), along with its thrills in stealth combat element that made it is a complete package. See it differently though as a directable graphic novel, where fate of each character chosen and decisions made for them may have us felt morally responsible for how they turned out--something politicians need to play before they plunge people and nations in war.
In anyway, give this an honest try. Select a 20 day experience and do your best. Once the basic elements are understood, go for the 80 days and give it a second go.
After trying to play this game for a while, this game brings me to the war atmosphere that very sad and depressing and then my imagination start to fly to the war zone and change my mind about what war as it was.
Latest shown review was from 2014 and saying "ignore the hype". Well, I played the game when it was out, I replayed it due to newly released DLC. That's a good game in its genre. No, decisions you make are not, like suggested in previous review, to be made from where the sounds come from. This game has been derived into a board game, that is a clue.
Actually I think it desereves 3.5 stars, but it's okay to give 4 stars than 3 stars. First of all, this is a totally new approach on war games. Were there games that deal with civilians in war? With that new concept, the narrative can make people be shocked. The atmosphere is also good; broken houses, people in shelter, looters, snipers, radio(the only way to know what's going on), and much more.
However, the game can let you down. Although the atmosphere is really nice, the choices you can make is always limited to somewhat unrealistic ways. There are NO interactions with other survivors. You CAN'T ask for help. There are just aggressive enemies, not aggressive enemies, sellers, and kind people who you can't talk with. You have to steal, fight, or run away. It's like the game says, "War is hell. The only you should care is yourself.(and your small group) Fxxk others regardless what kind of people they are." Also, you have to go dangerous-look like places if you want to survive without doing something bad. It is true that all places in war zone is dangerous, but normally, you wouldn't go to places with flames and gun-firing sounds to scavenge, would you? And because there is no way to talk or ask for help, you must steal from kind people. However, if you do something bad, the survivors will be depressed and murmurs "Why did I..." This is somewhat annoying.
Conclusion: It could be a "great game" but it just remains as just a nice game. However, given that it is an indie game, made based on an unique concept, and still have good narrative and shockingly good aspects, I can say it's definitely worth to play.
Pros
-Really good atmosphere, good narrative
-Unique game that deals with civilians in war
-Can give you a shocking experience..only if you didn't see walkthroughs and use save cheating
Cons
-Almost no interactions with other survivors: Don't expect a war simulator, it's a "game"
-Lacking replay value
-Somewhat unkind-may not know what to do at first.
