Description
Interpret the law as you see fit in This Is the Police 2, sequel to the acclaimed noir drama This Is the Police! Run the sheriff’s department, manage your cops, investigate, interrogate, and incarcerate. Make tough decisions – and try to keep out of prison yourself! – in this story-driven mixture of adventure, strategy, and turn-based tactical combat.

Is it a simulation? A management game? A tactical challenge? A visual novel? A puzzle? It’s all of these, and more!

Dive into one-of-a-kind -story driven experience.

Welcome to Sharpwood, a cold and harsh border town riven with violence, where no one is completely innocent. Smugglers, gangs, and screaming populists call this town their home. To maintain peace and order, the young sheriff Lilly Reed (Sarah Hamilton, The Longest Journey) will have to team up with fugitive criminal Jack Boyd (Jon St. John, Duke Nukem), and pray that her dangerous plan doesn’t spiral out of control.

Take charge of the Sheriff’s department.

Your subordinates aren’t just some resource; they are living people with their own strengths, weaknesses, fears and prejudices – and you'll have to reckon with all of them in order to survive. Is one of your guys drinking too much alcohol? Or always coming up with excuses for not coming to work? Or does he refuse to follow orders? You’ll have to show a steady hand if you want to impose discipline on this department.

Engage in tactical combat.

During your most dangerous operations, the game will switch to turn-based combat. Gather a team of your finest cops (or use your drunk and stupid bums – you don’t always have the luxury of being choosy!). Carefully study the terrain, adapt your plans, stealthily approach your suspects and use non-lethal weapons and equipment – if the situation allows. True, sometimes gunfights are almost impossible to avoid, but be careful: This Is the Police 2 doesn’t have hit points. A single bullet can cost a cop their life.

Become a true detective.

Collect evidence, study case materials, interrogate suspects (or use more... forceful methods) and send the criminals to court. And if the suspect was innocent? Perhaps it's time to find out if any Sharpwood judges can be bought.

A gloomy and bitter end for Old Jack

Some players found the game slow and tedious, but actually the playthrough is shorter than the first game. It did take much time watching the cutscenes, but the voicing and the storyboards are still at the same and high level of the first game. You could exactly feel how the emotion went through these people's hearts. Other than the normal cop dispatching, cop shift, case investigation parts, the XCOM like turn based tactic game is also fun, and I think it smart to keep this new game experience as just a small part without ruining the whole playthrough. Yet the plot was still like the first game, the end was already set even you made different decisions in the playthrough, and this is the only part that I was not content with. I didn't expect our Old Jack to end up like this, but what could a poor old cornered man do? Might be sad, but it worths savouring.

Much better gameplay, story still king

A more detailed review is available here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=76D9GOjYZmg This game carries on the story of Jack Boyd. Now he's on the run from the law since his corruption drew the attention of the Feds. If you enjoyed the story of the first, you'll enjoy this one as well. The only minus I can argue is that Jack's character development is not as detailed, but he's still interesting as ever. But the gameplay has seen vast improvements. The dispatcher work is both more engaging and more reliant on your decisions since cops now have attributes that help them perform their tasks on the field. The investigations are more fleshed out, with multiple suspects to look out for. The Xcom-ish gameplay you've seen in the trailer is decent, but mostly has the benefit of making the development of your cops more relevant than just "big bars = stonks". I admit that sometime they outstay their welcome due to the length of some, and the instant-fail-state stealth missions can kiss my ass for all I care. In short, it's a more enjoyable experience than the first, from my perspective.

Great for playing through once

The game has an interesting premise and I love the noir atmosphere. Managing the variety of police personalities is interesting. Dark humor lightens the game, whose main plot is definitely in the grim noir side. My only gripe with the game is the way it offers an illusion of choice, when there isn't really any. Nothing you do (other than failing the game that it ending because of it) alters the plot. There are several places where the game implies your choices matter, such as in the competition with Carter. But it simply doesn't; the plot is written in one way and the game forces you to lose the competition, for example, no matter what you do. This kind of railroading might be fitting for the existentialistic dread common to neo-noir, but it is an annoying things to find in a game. Still, worth it for playing through once. Some of the side cases and personalities are quite interesting, while the main plot is quite basic.

Bloated story, amateurish voice acting

If you're familiar with the first, then this one is similar in the management screen and adds a turbased tactical combat element. The former is fun and with some improved visuals. I really enjoyed the whole PD management from the first game. But the tactical combat really is too shallow to be considered added value in this case. What I'm really put off by is, as many reviewers have pointed out, the awful voice acting and bloated story sequences. The first game had story sequences but they were maybe a couple minutes at most. This game starts you out with a 20 minute non-skippable story sequence. Then, even for calls, there's just an unnecessary amount of awful writing and more plot sequences. I don't know why the developers thought to turn this series into a story heavy title suddenly because the first, while it did have a fitting narrative, it didn't feel like it "got in the way" of the gameplay and the fun. If you played the first and enjoyed that management gameplay, that's why you play these games. We don't play "Sim City" for 10 minute story sequences for some Sim's homelife and their conversations with the mayor's assistants. We play for the GAMEPLAY. I came to this sequel for more of what I enjoyed from the first but it turns out the gameplay comes secondary to the developers' writing ambitions.
