Still a great experience
Returning to this game after all these years reminded me of all the fun times I've had with it. The dialogues are amazing, the history entertaining and the choices often hard. The graphics aged relatively well and even though the combat system can be a little clunky, the way in which Geralt moves around during the fights is good. Overall, a really great experience

One of the best fantasy games
Good RPG as it is, with a ton of quests, main and optional, ton of walking and talking and 50+ hours of exploring. If you are already a fan of original book series, you'll find many tiny or big references here and there. Those who worked on the story are in love with the Sapkovsky's creation, I'm sure of it. But if you know nothing about ''The Witcher'' now, this is the perfect start. What is essential for good fantasy game? Atmosphere of Middle Ages, of course. You're a professional beast hunter. Your home was robbed, one of your friends had been killed, another one -- wounded. With empty pouch and sword on your back you're travelling to Vizima pursuing the Salamandra band. On your way you can make some money slayng beasts and helping people in need. Or will you choose another way? There will be multiple times when you'll need to make a choise and then deal with consequences. Make a friend or an enemy, choose one side or don't choose at all. In books and glossary you can find useful information on politics, secret organisations, events of great importance and beasts, of course. Gain experience through quests and battles, make your witcher killing machine. Skin your prey and use its guts for brewing potions. Smash pesant girls and sorceresses. Is this game ideal? Of course not. It could be from the story point. Unfortunately it is low budget game, so there is various optimisation issues. For exemple, if you'll find evidence against alchemist in the Chapter III investigetion, it can brake your games. Sometimes it's impossible to claim the quest reward because NPC doesn't want to talk about it. Fighting sometimes looks more like it is in JRPG. Locations may be confusing so you'll run circles time to time. But you'll totaly forget everyting when another conversation with the story character will turn upside down your previous understanding of the plot and you'll start new chapter with clear new vision. So play this game, but be ready to spent nights in it's world.

A unique experience
This game has aged, no doubt about that. For the time it was released I would say it was amazing and underrated. The combat fealt different than anything I have played before. It is not just point, click and slash. Correct swords and fighting style have to be used to come on top. As I have only played the 3rd game in the franchise prior to this I can say that it has layed a foundation in some game mechanics that made the 3rd game what it was. What I found challanging is that this game does not hold your hand unlike most of the games that come out nowadays. It instead twists your arm backwards and asks to write your name on a peace of paper. I played on normal difficulty so I can image the frustration I would have if I were to decide to play on hard since even on medium I got frustrated with some sections and had to re-load a save file from 30 minutes ago just to do some proper preparation or look up on the internet on how to proceed with the quest since it sometimes doesn't just tell you where to go or what to do. Despite the game having aged and having some issues here and there it was an amazing experience. It could not be for everyone especially since many of us have been spoiled by modern graphics and gameplay. I rate it at 4/5 because for the time it was release it's amazing. Would rate it higher if some things would have been smother and didn't feel punishing because of it.

On par with Witcher 3, just install mods
If you can get over the fighting mechanics and are willing to install a few mods, this game is just good as TW3: A very well written main story, many interesting side quests, large open world, nice music, choices that influence the world. Recommended mods: Rise of the White Wolf, Witcher 3 Character Faces by Hiuuz, Perfect Blood, Sound & Texture Overhaul
