Frustration and thrills
The game has so many good elements that it makes the shortcomings so much more frustrating. The most frustrating element of all is combat. Half the time you will end up losing about half your life waiting for the protagonist to FINALLY draw his sword and allow you to attack. Combat is done in a similarly frustrating way where you have to click (and time these clicks to chain combos) on enemies, but from time to time you will miss (for no obvious reason) and MOVE rather than attack. But perhaps the worst part is escort missions. Any escort is made of paper, but rather than running from combat or being low priority for monsters and bandits they seem to draw them in like flies to honey. I have had to give up the game half way through Act I, simply because of the downright awful combat mechanics - which is even more frustrating because the story seems pretty awesome and the metaworld is very compelling.

5/5 Would dance with a striga again.
I just finished playing through The Witcher a couple of days ago, and I can see why it is considered one of the modern classics of PC gaming. I thoroughly enjoyed the complex plotlines, political intrigue, and complicated character development. I recommend it wholeheartedly to any PC gamer.

Great game, bit quirky
As someone who's used to Elder Scrolls and third person action games, the combat in this game is a bit difficult to get used to. People expecting one to one execution wont get it, it's not a turn-based game, nor is it a 3rd person action game, rather the combat is a matter of picking the appropriate fighting style and clicking at the appropriate moment to continue a combo. First time players like myself may find themselves clicking a lot and as a result not doing anything at all. Once you get past the combat, the game is very enjoyable. Alchemy has always appealed to me and while there is some magic involved in the game, the making and drinking of potions and poisons is very important. The graphics are a bit dated by this point, but overall for the story and the dialogue it's definitely worth playing.
