Description
Investigate an abandoned trading post, explore its surroundings and solve the terrible mystery it holds. The Whisperer (Le Murmureur) is a short story-driven point & click game set in Lower Canada at the beginning of the 19th century.

Lower Canada, 1814. A trading post in a remote valley is found abandoned. The two winterers who inhabited it have disappeared. Robert, a voyageur of the North West Company, is tasked in investigating their disappearance. To find the truth, he will have to face horrors of all kinds...

Inspired by games such as Scratches and The Dark Eye, The Whisperer is an ode to the classic horror point & click subgenre. You will find the old school adventure features that we all love: puzzle solving, exploring, inventory, using and combining objects.

The Whisperer is a standalone game, but it also serves as a prelude to The Whispering Valley (2022). It is around 45 minutes long.

Why using word "game"?

wait wait wait... is it a game, or what? First, we should have all I need: an adventure, a point and click and horror trama. But this thing is kidding me or the entire genre. Fortunately I received it for free, but I spent too much time in playing it. The game looks and feels incomplete, in the first minute you cannot understand what and how you have to do. You find the usual locked door, you find the usual key under the rock, you enter in a room where you have to start spam click the screen to understand how to go forward, until, don't ask me why, you have to use the axe on the bed... Wha... What?!? Seriously?!? I quit, and uninstalled

To simplistic and to short

I got this game for free but even so I cannot in good conscience say this game is worth it, I finished it in 27 minutes and some of those minutes were loading screens... The graphics aren't bad, but today, any game looks good and graphics, to me, aren't everything anyway. About the game, is a very basic first person, point and click game made on Unity, if you know the very first Dark Fall point and click game? Is like that but way more basic and simplistic.

A Dollop of Point & Click Adventure

I clicked a button on the GOG homepage to get this game for free a few days ago, and I fired it up without looking at any info on it. I was surprised to find it's not a full game. It's a brief experience with a small area to explore, a few items to interact with, and a few diary entries to read. The game is not very well-constructed, I'm afraid to say. The game's world and scenario are static, save for a few minor creepy events. There's a lack of feedback for interactions, both in cases of success and failure. Loading times are strangely long (6+ seconds on an SSD) for how small the areas are. The inventory system is clunky. Texture resolution is way too low. I actually enjoyed the very beginning of the game the most, where it's a surreal, ultra-dark environment. That got my imagination humming, but unfortunately it gave way to the snowy Canadian (I think?) wilderness. The traditional node-based navigation appealed to me as a long-time fan of adventure games, but it's probably unnecessarily alienating for younger gamers. Apparenlty this game cost $5 standard price. There needs to be a high-quality experience at that price for a 30-minute game, and The Whisperer doesn't deliver that kind of value. The game doesn't have much to offer, so I recommend skipping this and going for The Whispering Valley. That's a game that will last a few hours.

Limited lighting

After going through the bright-white snowy outdoors, I felt the need to reduce brightness to a more comfortable amount. Then when entering the cave, it was extremely dark where the path to the next area wasn't visible until I restored brightness, requiring a search for the hotspot. As for the rest of the game, it is rather short with a low amount of story. It's possible to infer the key points in the plot, but it doesn't leave a strong feeling that makes the ending feel disjoint for the player. Puzzles were rather light, most of them feel equivalent to a pixel hunt.

Even the sale price isn't worth it.

No tutorial, nauseating movement. I couldn't be bothered to spend more than two minutes on the opening scene before quitting.
