A classic dungeon-crawler
I first played The Summoning on release in 1992 and enjoyed it immensely. My family had to get the clue book though, because it's a massive puzzle-dungeon, having many switch and pressure-plate puzzles throughout that can take forever figuring out by trial-and-error if you don't have a solution handy. It's also possible to permanently consume some necessary quest items without realizing it, so keeping backup saves handy is a must for first-time players. The gameplay loop is addicting, the combat is rudimentary but often fun, and the overall story is quite compelling. The progression system for your character is balanced enough to feel rewarding, though it would've been nice to have a better system to recuperate spell points than simply waiting or consuming nightshade plants. Overall this is one of DreamForge's best early games and certainly great for the low price point. Recommended!
