Good Lovecraftian game

I own the game on Steam, in past I finished the Deluxe Edition I got somewhere on Internet (there was time when there was no way to legally purchase the complete PC Deluxe Edition anywhere), now I bought Deluxe Edition on GOG - I guess this proves I like the game. The good things: - atmosphere is great (the first impressions of moving through the large half sunken city are unforgettable) - large open city where is possible to travel freely after the the tutorial chapter - music - hero who just looks precisely like a Lovecraftian hero in 1920s should look like - interesting mechanism of solving cases (taken over from the Sherlock Holmes games by the same developer) - the game is finally available in full after years of fighting between the developer and the publisher (which meant inability to get Deluxe version legally) Neutral things: - story - it is not bad and it works for the game, but it is also nothing unforgettable. If you are a Lovecraft fan, then the story has everything it should have, though nothing really exceptional. Negative things - the city is big but not very interactive, so after the initial breath taking impressions there comes routine (and usage of fast travel) - NPCs are useful only when having something task related, otherwise they just repeat one sentence - combat - well, this is maybe just my personal problem, I am a turn based fan, so real time combat with suddenly appearing monsters was not for me, fortunately that is not the main part of the game (and maybe shooter fans will like it) Overall I would say the game is a rough diamond - definitely worth the attention (and I definitely intend to return to do some side quests or even replaying the whole game), but it would probably benefit from more depth of the game world even if it meant that it would not be so large. So it is not 5 stars, but it is a solid 4 star game, far better than some other Lovecraft-like games (e.g, much better than disappointing "Arkham Horror: Mother's Embrace")

Good Game

Played this game a few years ago on Steam, a good story and very atmospheric. And you don't have to be a FPS gaming master to do well in it, which is good for an aging gamer like myself. I completed the game, which is something of high praise in itself, coming from me, since I have a bad habit of buying games and never finishing them. If I had to be completely honest, I'd say it's really a strong star 4-star game, because it doesn't have a lot of replay value, but I'll round it up one. I figure if GOG is allowing people who've never played the game to leave one-star reviews of it based on the writer of the source material, then it's only fair that I get to combat their short-sighted black and white view of the world and the entirety of history with a five-star one. Lovecraft died in 1937 and all his works are in the public domain, so there's no proceeds going to some secret cabal of white supremacists, and as far as I know, the racists of the world aren't compiling old letters of Lovecraft into some kind of Racist Bible to support their worldview. Although we do have have at least one other one-star review here from a guy (proudly displaying a Confederate flag as his avatar) who's mad that the devs put up disclaimers about Lovecraft's racism to assuage the other angry crowd... Frogwares just can't win. But anyway, to say that buying this game is directly supporting racism is a stretch. To all of you who have the brain power to separate a work of fiction from the foibles of the man who created it, I say enjoy the game - with a clean conscience. ;)

Finally on PC

I first played through Sinking City on the PS4, and having played Lovecraft(ian) games since Shadow Of The Comet and Prisoner of Ice, through memorable titles like Dark Corners Of The Earth, less memorable ones like Transient and so on, I have to say this is one of my favourites. The atmosphere is spot on, the detective elements are fun - the same developer also made Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened which brings the Mythos to 221B Baker Street - and there's multiple endings. Yes it's kind of a shame that the city isn't more interactive, but this is FrogWares not Rockstar - frankly what they achieved with their budget and team is commendable, and it's great they've finally got out from under their difficulties with their publisher. Also you get to shoot the KKK. 5/5

Dated Title, with merits, but...

tl;dr at bottom This title has been a long time coming. A lot of people rallied behind Frogwares, who went through a great deal of hassle to get this IP back in their own hands. Chances are, if you own a copy of this game outside of a brief window of time in 2021, it is published by Nacon, and not the legitimate copy. Worth rebuying if you want to support the devs, but.... The game is a bit dated nowadays in its mechanics, specifically, combat. The combat is absolutely horrible, because it tries to be a survival horror game by limiting your ammo and guns, but it's necessary to kill certain horrors along the way to proceed unless you save scum a *lot*. You end up getting so many materials that farming for mats seems stupid, until you realize the one item you need for bullets, you're chronically short on. The story itself is a wonderful piece. I'm not sure they needed to let you know in the intro that there's racist themes, though. Anyone doing a piece on the early 20th century should assume their audience would know, if you're looking for any kind of faith to the material written at the time, it's going to have less tolerant tones than modern pieces. The "racism" in the game really isn't racism, though. It's townies who don't like outsiders, and the people I've seen that are the victim of "racism" are people with physical deformities, which is NOT racism. It's ableism. Totally different thing. The Frogwares story is a great one, and it's awesome they fought a fairly big publisher that also manufactures high end headphones for gaming pc's and consoles, but there's no point rebuying this unless you just want to throw money at them for throwing money's sake. tl;dr - The game isn't any different than it was when it came out, besides a few dlc's. Worth a playthrough? Definitely. Worth rebuying? Not if you're on a budget.

OKish game

I really like the Lovecroft universe. This is why the trailer hook me directly to play the game. I haven´t finished the game yet...maybe i will someday... Pros: - interessting story with enough sidequests - a mix of detective work at scenes and killing ´monsters´ like in resident evil 2 (felt like that for a few moments) - they put a lot of love into details what i like Cons: - to many bugs while playing (i got stuck often in the surrounding for exemple) - i don´t know why but i didn´t manage to master the controls blindly...maybe it is unnatural in comparison to other games (it borders because after several hours of playing the game I stil misclicked for the same function during a stressful moment ingame) At the end it is a nice game but I didn´t catch me to play it regularly because of the cons.
