It should be a true Lovecraftian Game...

Seriouslly , you're happy this game plays like a clone of other games tropes? Mix Resident Evil action, Silent Hill 2 Remake gore and ambience, Dead Space mechanics and Alone in the Dark 2024 pace and story beats....can you see it now? They went for pleasing the kids instead of making a true sequel. No investigation, no slow burn into madness, no weirdness of 1900s societal thinking, no seriousness of the impending doom, no vunerability , then no Lovecraft. There is a game here, an original take on survival horror , but it's not what it should be after all. Frogwares had the tools, and they chose fame instead of a place amongst the Old Ones. I love their games but my preference remains with the first game. So buy it if you want a RE clone or a SH clone, think about it if you want a Lovecraftian game. I don't say no, i say maybe not.

Lovecraft Resident Evil

They weren't lying about this being their best game yet. They nailed the survival horror gameplay loop this time. A huge improvement over the first game, which I liked but which also had some very obvious flaws. Strongly recommended for anyone who is a fan of either RE-style games, or the Cthulhu mythos.

Different from the first, but great fun!

The Sinking City 2 does thing quite differently from the first game. I haven't played too much yet (a couple of hours) but the game ditches the open world detectiveness of the first game and instead goes for a more modern survival horror game, complete with inventory management and ammo scarcity. It borrows heavily from modern titles such as Resident Evil 2 Remake, which isn't a bad thing in my opinion! Instead of roaming the city freely in search of clues like in the first game you are instead wandering around smaller environments this time around. This tighter exploration results in a much denser game. Enemies lurk around corners, puzzles and locked doors are everywhere and you have to really pay attention to find extra ammo and resources when scouting around. An excellent map also helps with the exploration since it highlights rooms where you have found all the items yet. This is a departure from the first game but as I started before, I like it! I'd rather have the developer try something new than make the same game twice. The action feels punchy and rewarding and the puzzles are quite fun too! Not too hard but I had to at least read notes and pay attention to what it said. The story is off to a promising start too. You plays as Calvin and we are dropped in medias res as he is trying to find a way to wake his beloved from what looks like a coma. Both are presented as being interested in the occult and you wonder how they ended up in this situation... Overall, it is a departure from The Sinking City 1, a different beast altogether really, but still good! Vibes are good, graphics are excellent and combat is tight and engaging (especially on the harder difficulties). Wholeheartedly recommended so far!

I'm disappointed

You know what is really annoying in a game where I'm trying to enjoy some cosmic horror? Being given five bullets then having three enemies thrown at you who each take four to kill at least. The melee system is terrible - it is basically useless and the dodge is slow and inconsistent. I think the main annoyance for me is dead bodies which will obviously wake up later, and enemies appearing out of the water for a cheap jump scare. Also, having a tiny key take up one inventory slot where a machine gun takes two is unnecessary storage starvation and forcing me to run half-way across the map to empty my pockets so I can run all the way back to pick up tiny items is not good game design even if RE might be famous for it. I want to play this for the story but instead I find I can't even enjoy the world because I'm running from all the enemies I don't have the ammo for. I supported this dev (which I don't regret) and I love games in this universe, but I'm sorry I'm not enjoying the gameplay enough to finish this one - the choice to make this a 'survival horror' (read: you have small pockets and not enough bullets all the time) was a mistake imo.

A pretty solid survival horror

This survival horror game is pretty familiar to anyone who enjoys the Resident Evil series or the more recent Cronos. The Sinking City is a beautifully apocalyptic setting and the Lovecraft genre always lends to a compelling eerie vibe. Combat is fine, not nearly as balanced compared to higher budget titles. The story is passable and the VO is surprisingly good. As for performance, this game runs buttery smooth on my mid-range PC. There is also replayability here with a challenge/unlockables system nearly identical to the modern Resident Evil games. Unfortunately, the game's quality begins to nosedive the further you go into the game. The first few areas are very good, but the later half of the game devolves into fetching keys and battle arenas. Likewise the writing loses all subtlety by the end, with the characters straight-up explaining the plot. This is a solid 7/10 game and I think still worth playing if you are a fan of the genre. This dev team definitely has the potential to produce something really special, so I'll be keeping an eye out for whatever their next project ends up being.
