Description

Explore the palace and cavernous depths below an ancient desert city, under siege by its neighbouring kingdom. Master dynamic parkour abilities and use cunning and stealth to discover the true threat lurking within. Evade guards, defeat enemies, befriend potential new allies, improve your skills, and foil the evil plot before it's too late.

  • 2D Stealth Metroidvania with parkour exploration
  • Rich retro-style pixel art, hand animated frame-by-frame, with modern effect from Unreal Engine 4
  • Immersive and dynamic audio builds tension and highlights danger
  • An eclectic range of characters to discover and aid
  • Smooth controls and fluid animations to avoid enemies, evade capture and find other ways to deal with threats

Use stealth to sneak through the environments, incapacitating enemies or ghosting past as if you were never there. Run, jump, slide, shimmy, pole swing and more as you navigate the intricate game world, finding new items, equipment and skills, and unlocking previously-inaccessible locations.

The Siege and the Sandfox is a stealth Metroidvania with one giant continuous world, linking the newer palace above, older prisons below, the ancient mausoleum, and an intricate network of caves woven amongst them all. Encounter unique enemies in each area - some more capable at pursuing sneaky Sandfoxes than others! Keep on your guard, as even an extinguished torch or door left open can trigger the suspicions of those out to get you.

A shining city lies besieged in the heart of a vast desert. As the moon rises over the royal palace, a notorious assassin watches the king die to a traitor’s hand. Discovered, falsely accused and thrown into the labyrinthine dungeons below, they must escape to tell the tale else the city will fall.

The Sandfox – known as the Kasha’i – is famed across the land as the legendary line of faithful protectors and servants to the crown. The current holder of this mantle has been left for dead at the base of ‘Traitor’s Fall’ - a deep pit leading to the depths of the underground prisons. Betrayed by the Queen in order to hide her regicide, you must now take on the role of the Sandfox and begin your journey back up to the palace. Save the kingdom from the Queen’s evil plot and reap revenge with the iconic weapon of the Kasha’i: the glass dagger.

In your journey through the dark caves, dusty mausoleums, dangerous prisons, and crumbling ancient architecture, you will need to avoid the nastier inhabitants of this underground world and aid those friendlier to a new face. Your progression will lead to the discovery of the true threat to the kingdom above: a sand-borne evil emerging below. As dusk becomes night, and night becomes dawn, you will need to rely on the aid of new allies, make your way back into the palace, and end the treachery of the wicked Queen.

Fun idea, falls short of full vision.

The Siege and The Sandfox's best aspects are the parkour mechanics, nice pixel art and exploring the world. If you like wandering in a metroidvania style labyrinth, lost and looking for any resemblances of story/game progressions, npcs, anything, than this game might be for you. The first few hours were definitely enjoyable, learning the parkour mechanics and trying to explore a bit of the map, but within 3-4 hours, you quickly realize that the game wants you to wander all over the map with no clear sense of direction or game progression. That is the main type of gameplay in Siege and the Sandfox. For example, a very common theme is to open your map and see an unexplored area. Assuming this will help the game progression, you go there and explore that area, only to find out that you cannot progress further and that its basically just a dead end that is of no use to you. Now, you have to spend another 45 minutes to an hour to get back to the area you were before, in order to search for a new area to get stuck in. If this sounds exhilarating to you, then this game might be for you. Pros: -Well thought out and fun parkour mechanics for moving through the map - Gorgeous Pixel Art - Good sound design and music - Certain areas have fun puzzle-type map mechanics Cons: - Designed to make the player explore endlessly, lost and without much purpose. - Besides the opening cinematic, no real story being told or discovered throughout the game. - Bugged Enemy AI (causing you to HAVE to reset to checkpoint) - Exploring the map is very punishing with little reward Conclusion: In my opinion, if everything was executed to a higher level, this type of game could be a 4 to 5 stars. But the fact that the story is basically non-existent, exploring the map is very punishing and unrewarding, and the game is riddled with bugs, I have to give this game a 2 out of 5 stars.

We'll look back on this as a classic

If you enjoy stealth mechanics and games with platforming/parkour, this is a must. For everyone else, the challenge isn't so great that it can't be overcome with a bit of patience and attention. The art style is glorious and the narration and sound design make it a truly immersive experience. If you allow yourself to be taken in by the atmosphere, it's hard to imagine coming away disappointed. I can easily see this becoming a classic beyond just its niche, maybe even a speed running favorite for more than just myself.

Fun with some minor dents

Overall the game was very enjoyable if you like stealth games and metrodvanias this will probably sratach an itch for you. There is a few bugs in the system that you will hit pretty constantly but nothing some patching couldn't fix. The world doesn't hold your hand and gives you free roam to go anywhere you want or accomplish things before you were ever told to do them. It has a nice charm and works well. The controls are pretty smooth but could use some refinement. The story and the way its told with the narrator is quiet enjoyable. I kind of wish it was longer overall. Overall it could use some more polish but there is a great game here and I hope they polish it up more and either expand on it or deliver another great game like this!

A good game released unfinished

I've waited months to see if an update would ever come out for this game and it appears it's been abandoned. While the game is quite good, it was released in an unfinished state with glitches and game breaking bugs galore. Had the dev(s) stuck around and polished the game post-release, I could have easily seen this game becoming a standard-bearer of the genre.
