Description

THE SHORE is a game about the mystery of the unknown, set on a forbidden island filled with horrors. Based on the works of H. P. Lovecraft, the story features many of his best-known creations and more. Players will see the world through the eyes of Andrew, a father in search of his lost daughter. Players will experience The Shore through immersive, atmospheric gameplay and encounter the most nightmarish Lovecraftian entities, all while solving mind-bending puzzles. Try to survive as Andrew as he endeavors to save his daughter’s life and, perhaps, uncovering the secrets lurking within his own sanity.

Presented with a Lovecraftian style, As players dive deeper and deeper into the mystery, they’ll face overwhelming odds, Andrew's moments that will make you question his sanity, and a series of slow burn scenes. It’s only by mastering the artifacts of the old gods combat mechanic that they can stay one step ahead of the darkness that tries to swallow the world of his, but will that be enough?

With the ghost of an action/mystery/horror play style and the mind of a psychological thriller, The shore's dramatic atmosphere, deep and multilayered story, and exceptionally tense, horrific, combat sequences provide players with an overwhelming and stunning gaming experience.

An Great Horror Experience

I've seen the other reviews, some claiming it to be a walking simulator which isn't really true, some claiming it to be "alright", but honestly I got more scares out of this than I did the entirety of Resident Evil 8, and many modern horror games. It perfectly gets the crypticness and unimiginable horrors of Lovecraft, and provides an amazing setting and plenty of scares based on that setting. A perfect encompassment of many of HP Lovecraft's creatures and fears given form in a way that that just perfectly embodies them. Significantly better than any "Call of Cthulhu" entry I have ever played, especially the most recent. This game has branching paths where you can interact with loads of estranged mythos and alter the path of your player character, meaning it has good replay value, or at least what I interpret as such. The guidelines say each game must stand on its own merit. This game, however short, stands above the merit of its competitors, and I can't help but compare the experience I had with it to the experience I had with others in the same existing genre. That being said, this is also coming from the perspective of a fan of HP Lovecraft. As such, for me, there's a ton of enjoyable and fascinating things to see here, all great references to Lovecraft's work. I recommend this game. It is simple. It's made by one guy, who has managed to embody many of HP Lovecraft's works and his specific style of story telling into one game, something many people seem to overlook when crafting a "Lovecraftian" horror game.

Well intentioned amateur effort.

I was expecting this to be a lot better than it ended up being sadly. It has an intially promising start, with you waking up on a beach, foreboding clues and some strange artefacts. Sadly it has a tentacle monster appearing on the beach within about 5 minutes of you starting, and what little subtltely there is dies right there. It's not even really a horror game, more an incredibly disjointed spooky walking simulator that takes you on a whirlwind tour of a lot of Lovecraft's work. Most of it consists of sections which are only a few minutes long, where you solve a brief puzzle or get chased as you wander through surreal dreamscapes. Most of it's not terribly well executed, and whilst there are a couple of really nice visuals, even most of them are sub par. However, the development appears to have mostly been done by one person, so I can't really get too mad at it. It really tries to work in as much of the wider mythos as it can, even if most of it is as meaningful in the scheme of the story as a random seagull you walk past It's well intentioned if nothing else. It's honestly not great, but I don't regret playing it. Would reccomend if you really like lovecraft and it's on a sale.

Has potential, needs polish.

It appears to be two games in one, you start by exploring and collecting items and learning about the history and experiences of those on the island, and then you loose your inventory and it switches to a linear, run, shoot and solve puzzles, at a much faster pace. I would have preferred more of the former. Positive: Excellent visuals, custom models, and creature designs. Lots of Lovecraftian references. Negative: Controls cannot be rebound, I used a key mapper to change key bindings, short game, even taking your time, your first play though is likely going to be less than 2 hours. Some documents don't have an alternate text and are hard to read. Some puzzles can only be solved by trial and error, so a few deaths on the first play-though are pretty much inevitable. Needs optimising, sections load slowly, particularly after a death, even with an M.2. Note: You can move forward and back with the arrow keys, but this is not the same as using W and S, W and S work with the run/sprint key, the arrow keys allow you to run with the run/sprint key, but not to sprint, at least not consistently. So your movement speed is slower, and you will die.

I expected a lot less from this one....

This game pleasantly surprised me. From how good it looked and sounded to even what kind of gameplay it expected out of you, nothing was what it seemed... and yet that is somehow fitting for a game of the mythos. Honestly if you like horror games in first person and enjoy the build up as much as the intensity of the payoff, you should absolutely give this one a shot! And if you have a taste for Lovecraft in particular, welcome... make yourself at home.

Average walking simulator.

The game initially seems promising, but after half an hour, you get the impression that it's all you're going to get. The visuals are nicely done, and the music is great, but the puzzles are not engaging at all. It's almost impossible to fail any puzzle, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but a bit more challenge would be welcome. The combat sections are also not very polished, and the animations look quite stiff. However, considering this is an indie game, overall it was an average experience for me. The €10 price is not justifiable. I would recommend buying this game only on sale. It took me less than two hours to finish.
