One of my favorite games

I had this game years ago when it was new and played it for hours. It is a bit slow but still fun. I actually prefer slow games. With this game I was able to study for school and play at the same time. i learned more studying that way then studying alone. Mainly because I didn't end up getting bored or frustrated with either the game or studying. Any way I had lost the disk and after playing several tablet games like it I wanted to play it again so was happy to find that GOG.com had it. Although I was not sure which settlers game I actually played years ago so got 2 and 3 as well as this one. I played all 3 last night and this is the one that I had. 2 was way different then what I remembered, 3 was close and this one is exactly like I remember.

I love this game as much as years ago!

I must admit the graphic really isn't the best but after you play a little you don't bother anymore at all! I love playing this game over Lan with friends! Though i couldn't find the map editor which should be coming with the mission CD which is included in the gold edition :( Someone else having this problem?

Works perfect on Win10

Just opened the installation directory and set compatibility mode to Win7. Started it, and had the good old Settlers 4 experience.

Impressive game, but lacks punch.

Looks great and sounds great. I have played this game many times. There is however one big thing that keeps me away from it, the AI. I like playing a single map against the AI, I never play the campaign. When starting a single map, the AI always knows your stats. This means that the AI will attack you when it knows your military strength is low. Once you reach a point where the AI thinks you are strong, it will stop attacking you. For me there is no challenge in this game anymore. Once I figured out how to quickly gather resources and power, the AI not even attempts intelligent tactics, it just stops. Maybe there are mods out there that can improve this, I don't know. It is such a shame for me, I love the building and expanding part of this game, but the fighting is a serious letdown. 3 out of 5 stars for me.

Time to Settlers down... (ugh, bad pun)

Easily one of the best strategy games ever made. Maybe it's just me showing my age, but I like games that let me take my turn, enjoy the gameplay as a casual pace, and just kick back and relax. Don't get me wrong, I do like action games too. But there's a time and place for everything, and Settlers is one of the few games where you can constantly make progress, micromanage your little town and feel like you're always doing someting useful, but at the same time, you don't have to do anything at all. You there, chop those trees. You, get some fish. You, look for minerals. Then you, the player, can just sit there looking at the screen for an hour if you want to. Even combat is simple, yet fun. Build army, walk up to the enemy and smash them to tiny pieces. Then simply rebuild your little army quickly, set them to protect the land you just conquered, and feel safe. So combat is there when you want it, but it's never there when you *don't* want it. Just the way it should be. Maybe it makes the game too easy, but again, there's time and place for everything, and this is the time and place to relax and have a cup of tea. NOTE: The review should focus on the game only, and I agree 100%. That said, I am having a tough time starting this game on Win10. Not sure what it is, and compability mode isn't helping. This is just a friendly notice, and does not affect the score or review at all. Just sucks to buy a game you can't play. If you're interested in retro-games and buy a lot of games on GOG.com, I recommend getting an older computer, or even a laptop. Old games on new computers will always be tricky.
