The Settlers® 2: Gold Edition

I loved this game as a kid, unfortunately this version is so pixilated as to be unplayable :(

slow development, too many details missing and too many redondant details

This title is a great strategic game. It is old and has pixel-like graphics but it still delivers. I am playing it since 20 years still listening to the same midi music. Why only 3 stars then? Because there is so much better title at https://www.siedler25.org/index.php?com=dynamic&mod=2&lang=en&PHPSESSID=2mi2eot2l484lh0pgfh2os7gj2 It is still the same game but in custom resolution (can support even 2560x1080), advanced multiplayer and many other stuff, though the gameplay remains the same. And the best thing - it is free.

If you are not familiar with the settlers series there is one thing you should know beforehand. This kind of game is slow, really slow! I mean excruciatingly slow!!! It's part of its charm but its not for everyone. Its a good game to start out with if you haven't played games at all, because its a rather simple game despite having a large economy to manage, lots of buildings to build, roads to connect, resources to discover and hostile empires to vanquish. The game can easily wear thin quickly though. Due to its slow pace and very sharp sounds and music. In terms of how it looks it has aged remarkably well. But because this is running in dosbox you could run into some trouble if you are not familiar with the controls and shortcuts of dosbox. If your windows OS decides to be a piece of shit again and throw you out of fullscreen and you don't know how to get back it can be frustrating. Sadly the game had a flaw even back then, the 4 races in the game all use the same colored skin little people, apparently african, asians, vikings and romans where all white people, who knew right? Except for the soldier guys who look right. This is in stark contrast with all the beautifully detailed buildings that are tailor made for all sides.
