I prefered them over Amnesia
I got Penumbra Overture from the first Humble Indie Bundle and didn't play through it till a year later. When I finally decided to play it, I finished the game in a single day. Yeah, I actually enjoyed it that much. Most people have probably played Amnesia by now,I found Penumbra to be a much more subtle and cerebral game though. The puzzles in Amnesia took me anywhere between 30 seconds and 5 minutes to solve, Penumbra meanwhile plays like an old-school point-and-click adventure game in its puzzle design. Penumbra didn't dumb itself down for its audience like Amnesia did, and it expected you to have to actually use the in-game map and notes to make it through, something which games just don't do anymore. Overture had the issue of extremely clunky combat, which fortunately was removed from the second game. Penumbra Requiem was Frictional's attempt at mimicking Valve's Portal franchise, which didn't work particularly well. Pretty much, imagine if Half-Life 1 was composed entirely of its puzzle segments, with none of the exploration or action found in that game. Yeah, I don't particularly recommend it and served as a disappointing end to the series. But Overture and Black Plague are definitely great heaps of survival-horror fun. If people want Amnesia but with Puzzles that will actually get your brain hurting, then this is the game to play.
