The Outer Worlds Expansion Pass is available here

The Outer Worlds is an award-winning single-player first-person sci-fi RPG from Obsidian Entertainment and Private Division.

Lost in transit while on a colonist ship bound for the furthest edge of the galaxy, you awake decades later only to find yourself in the midst of a deep conspiracy threatening to destroy the Halcyon colony. As you explore the furthest reaches of space and encounter various factions, all vying for power, the character you decide to become will determine how this player-driven story unfolds. In the corporate equation for the colony, you are the unplanned variable.

KEY FEATURES

The player-driven story RPG

In keeping with the Obsidian tradition, how you approach The Outer Worlds is up to you. Your choices affect not only the way the story develops; but your character build, companion stories, and end game scenarios.

You can be flawed, in a good way

New to The Outer Worlds is the idea of flaws. A compelling hero is made by the flaws they carry with them. While playing The Outer Worlds, the game tracks your experience to find what you aren't particularly good at. Keep getting attacked by Raptidons? Taking the Raptiphobia flaw gives you a debuff when confronting the vicious creatures, but rewards you with an additional character perk immediately. This optional approach to the game helps you build the character you want while exploring Halcyon.

Lead your companions

During your journey through the furthest colony, you will meet a host of characters who will want to join your crew. Armed with unique abilities, these companions all have their own missions, motivations, and ideals. It's up to you to help them achieve their goals, or turn them to your own ends.

Explore the corporate colony

Halcyon is a colony at the edge of the galaxy owned and operated by a corporate board. They control everything... except for the alien monsters left behind when the terraforming of the colony’s two planets didn’t exactly go according to plan. Find your ship, build your crew, and explore the settlements, space stations, and other intriguing locations throughout Halcyon.

Not bad, not good

I can see how some people were let down by this game, you hear Obsidian is making a space game and think 'fallout new vegas in SPACE?!' right? Well no. Aesthetically The Outer Worlds feels VERY Bioshock, from the art style to the consumable choices and the over the top cartooney levels of villified capitolism - all of which mostly annoyed me, I hated all of that in bioshock. The weapon armor and combat take more from Destiny 2 than anything, what it did take from new vegas was the quirky humor - except its been dialed to 11 and instead of being a cute little moment to lighten the mood it absolutely saturates the game and ruins any sense of seriousness the story or events portray, all the scientists die for humanity by experimenting on themselves? Huk huk well shucks, thats against company policy! ugh. What The Outer Worlds does do right, is the RPG aspects. Attributes (Strength, dexterity, intelligence, ect ect) All have meaningful impacts and significant downsides if you lower them to free up more points for other stats, combat stats feel rewarding and the typically noncombat stats all have useful in combat ties, such as increasing medical also increases damage you do to human enemies, charm can make enemies you attack cower for a moment , engineering can increase your damage with electric and plasma damage , lots of flexibility and customization here. The perk system is.....pretty hit or miss, some of them are really nice, others are so absurdly situation specific they are utterly useless outside of that specific situation (Such as headshot kills causing enemies to explode damaging any enemy (or friendly) target within 2.5 meters - do you know how RARE it is for enemies in this game to stand that close? The Supernova difficulty has some serious issues, you CANT sleep till you complete the first major questline, and you HAVE to sleep to cure concussion or crippled limbs, though the later you can 'bug out of' party but being overweight then fixing the weight.

A Nice Space RPG. Strange characters.

Well, it's not Fallout in Space, but it's a decent and well rounded space RPG. Pros: - unique world and style - lots of weapons and enemies - interesting quests - quite a long play if you add the DLCs and the secondary quests Cons: - some of the characters are... mediocre at best of times - some of the environment color choices are questionable (high contrast, eye bleeding colors) - the difficulty curve is not consistent with some mid game weapons having a huge damage drop - ranged weapons are ammo wasters, melee weapons are far superior, very annoying for ranged characters to have to constantly buy ammo - some of the DLC quests should have been part of the game itself as the main game is kind of short without. Conclusion: With proper characters (not what we have now), a more balanced difficulty curve, and less annoying color palette this could be quite a decent game series. It all depends on the characters. If they stay the same, it's a big loss.

Pretty Good

I've followed Obsidian's work for a long time. Outer Worlds is a fantastic addition to their library of games. I actually got this game for free off Amazon but I would absolutely have paid full price for it if I'd known how good it wasn from the outset. A great sense of humor and some fun world building that goes beyond the usual dark dystopia stuff and I would highly recomend it to anyone looking for a game that fits comfortably under the umbrella with titles like Fallout New Vegas.

Cool narrative

The narrative is cool and the design of the maps and art style is nice. I play a game like this for the story though so the overblown skill tree and perk upgrades and stuff is too complex for me to care about, gets in the way in my opinion. Though other people might want that so who knows.
