The Mildew Children: Chapter 1 is available here

Featuring a blend of 2D adventure and visual novel, The Mildew Children is a grim tale about a village inhabited only by children who follow savage pagan traditions. A young witch named Kyrphel and her sisters are bound to perform a macabre Ritual in order to save their village. A witch's demise during the ritual is not unusual, since not all can triumph over the Mistress of Death. But Kyrphel is strong enough to handle it. Or so she thought.

Combining the elements of fairy tale and horror, the story draws on pagan folklore and ancient beliefs. Accompany Kyrphel and her friends in this grim, beautifully hand-drawn adventure game. Take part in the Ritual and discover the secret of the village, interact with peculiar villagers, bewitch, and overcome the affliction that haunts the young sorceress.

- A mysterious tale that spans across 12 chapters
- Over 8 hours of narrative and gameplay combining investigations, puzzles, quick-time events (QTE) and multiple-choice dialogues.
- More than 30 unique locations: the village streets, the tangled paths of the forest thicket, the burial ground, as well as unique interiors - from old battered huts to magnificent chambers.
- A series of tough decisions that will force you to think twice about how you proceed - will you go against ancient traditions or follow them to the end?
- 10 characters with a detailed personality and story, 100 of unique portraits reflecting the characters' emotions during dialogues. Numerous side characters Kyrphel would have to interact with in order to fulfill her goals.

An excellent game!

Mildew Children" is a beautifully drawn game with an excellent story that engrossed me from beginning to end. The tale is set in a time when beliefs in witchcraft, magic, gods, and spirits suffuse every aspect of life and death. You play as a witch who must find a way to save her village—a community that has ostracized her—from imminent doom. As you make decisions that steer the story from one possible outcome to another, you become fully immersed in the character's worldview. This is the game's greatest achievement. It depicts a world that can be read on two levels: through the lens of magic and superstition, and from a modern perspective. Yet, the depiction remains empathetic. For the characters, magic, spells, and spirits are real forces. Hallucinogenic berries and mushrooms heighten one's ability to connect to the spirit realm. Possession by evil spirits manifests as panic attacks and is cast out by rituals that reassure and calm the sufferer. The central quest to save the village from destruction is compelling. Even though part of you knows the predictions cannot come true, you are carried along with the story's inexorable logic. If you're looking for a mature fantasy story that will transport you to another world and provide an emotionally moving experience infused with magic, "Mildew Children" is it.

Great Style But Has Warts and Need Codex

The setting is delightfully eerie. The characters are interesting. There appears to be a very deep lore to the game with a lot going on behind the scenes. That is almost my only real gripe that the game drops you in this world with little to no explanation as if you already know all about the traditions and people. A codex would have been nice. This wasn’t an issue at first but as the game goes on you are required to remember more and more things that you will be forced to use later and that combined with the language of the game was problematic. The art style is fantastic. The music is well done. The sound effects are good as well, used often enough to break up silence without being overbearing. The game does a good job of being more than just a visual novel. You move around places, there is an in game map, there is a decent rhythm game element as well as a decent QTE mechanic. The QTE parts are actually pretty challenging as you not only have to contend with keeping the bar in a certain section but you still have to click through the dialogue to further the game. There are two difficulty settings to the mini game as well as the option to turn them off so it should satisfy everybody. One other thing I would like to see changed is when it says you can “proceed” certain places it would be nice if it said where or what that place is. The map doesn’t really list what places are just where you have to go and where you currently are. Sometimes it doesn’t even list that. I played on Linux. It never crashed. I did encounter a bug where from chapter 6 through chapter 11 I had zero audio. There is just 1 graphics option and 3 audio options. You can manually save whenever you want and there didn’t seem to be a limit on how many save game files you can have. There was an auto save system although it doesn’t say when it’s saving. The game’s FPS was pretty low at times. The game didn’t seem to lag at all but none of my hardware was being taxed to explain the low FPS.

An Unusual But Brilliant Game

Writing isn't really my strong suit however after playing this game I feel this it really deservers another positive review. The game is a mix of Adventure Game and Visual Novel with has good sound and visuals(though these are some of things I tend to care the least about in video games so maybe take that with a grain of salt) but where it shines is how it can captivate you in it's world. The game doesn't hold your hand thrusts you into this grim supposedly fantastical world where you're never quite sure exactly what is going on or if it really is fantastical. They further complement this with interesting characters that give you further reason to get invested in this world along with "mini-games" which I really hesitate label as such. A normal mini-game takes you out of the story and into something else but these do the opposite*; through their integration with the dialogue and simplicity they manage to immerse you more into the game; when you're character is struggling you feel it, you aren't just pressing "2. Try Harder". As for the flaws I'd say the only real one(beside a few, what I assume to be, unnatural feeling translations) is that with the lack of handholding you kind of have to go out of your way to wander around every once in a while to complete "side quests" which kind of takes you out of the game as that's obviously not what you would be doing. Overall I'd say it's easily a 5/5 and vastly underrated game however I would say that if you don't enjoy games where there's not always a clear answer or lore about everything(at least one that is easy to find) or games that just expected to remember things(or at least take notes if you can't) you might not enjoy this game as much. Also if you're the kind of gamer who doesn't care about characters or story or "the world" but just the game play then you aren't going to like this game. *Or try to; there is an easy mode and an option to disable them if they are distracting you instead of helping immerse you.
