Description

Discover a dark mystery only a medium can solve. Explore the real world and the spirit world at the same time. Use your psychic abilities to solve puzzles spanning both worlds, uncover deeply disturbing secrets, and survive encounters with The Maw - a monster born from an unspeakable tragedy..

The Medium is a third-person psychological horror game that features patented dual-reality gameplay and an original soundtrack co-composed by Arkadiusz Reikowski and Akira Yamaoka.

Wield unique psychic abilities reserved for those with the gift. Travel between the realities or explore them both at the very same time. Use the Out of Body experience to investigate places where your real-world self can’t go. Create energy shields and deliver powerful spirit blasts to survive the spirit world and its otherworldly dangers.

Delve deep into a mature and morally ambiguous story, where nothing is what it seems and everything has another side. As a medium you see, hear and experience more than others, and with every new perspective you will change your perception on what happened at the Niwa resort.

Never-seen-before and officially patented gameplay that plays out across two worlds displayed at the same time. Explore the physical world and the spirit world simultaneously, and use the interactions between them to solve dual-reality puzzles, unlock new paths, and awaken memories of past events.

The Medium’s spirit world is a dark mirror reflection of our reality, a grim and unsettling place where our unpunished deeds, evil urges, and vile secrets manifest themselves and can take on a form. This world has been invented and designed under the inspiration of Zdzisław Beksiński’s paintings, Polish dystopian surrealist internationally recognized for his distinctive and strikingly ominous style.

Immerse yourself in the disturbing and oppressive atmosphere of the game thanks to the original ‘dual’ soundtrack co-created by Akira Yamaoka and Arkadiusz Reikowski. Yamaoka-san is a legendary Japanese composer best known for his work on the Silent Hill series; Reikowski is a Hollywood Music in Media Awards nominee who worked on such acclaimed horror games as Blair Witch, Layers of Fear, and Observer. Now they join their creative forces for the music and songs of The Medium.

OK-ish

The (facial) animations look strangely stiff, but otherwise the game has really stunning visuals. Especially the afterlife has a cool style that reminds me of works by Giger or Beksinski. The voice actors also do a good job and the atmosphere of the game is really nice and creepy. But that's it. The game's performance is really not good, even after several patches - although it's fair to say that these have helped quite a bit. In the scenes where the splitscreen feature is used, the frames drop mercilessly into the low 30s even with good hardware. Often they dip below that, causing stuttering. The controls are very janky and sometimes don't react, which makes chase or hide-and-seek scenes particularly annoying. Player feedback in form of visuals or audio cues is sometimes missing or too vague. It's often hard to tell if you're actually holding your breath, where you have to run from the monster or if you have to press a button in certain situations. Had to look up walkthrougs because of this. Mentioned monster scenes are just annoying imo... I hate this hide-and-seek/chase crap and was glad every time I was allowed to explore again in peace. Luckily these mechanics don't happen that often. The basic idea behind the story and the events in the hotel are interesting by themselves, but the characters remain absolutely flat and boring. Marianne seems oddly indifferent in the face of the ongoing events and the whole plot lacks some sort of motivation. I often asked myself "Why the hell are we on this journey?" or "Why are we still here?" The experience felt pointless to me. The puzzles are OK-ish but rather boring too, tbh. The split screen feature has a lot of potential that has unfortunately hardly been used. I'm hitting the character limit so I leave it at that. The Medium isnt a bad game per se, but I can't recommend buying it at full price. Maybe grab it while it's on sale if you like these kind of games. All in all, it sadly was a dissapointment for me.

artists can't understand game mechanics

this is a classic case of game designers and artist that have no understanding of cinema and game mechanics. like classic Resident Evil games, this game has fixed camera points. however, unlike classic resident evil games, this game has 360 movement. this is a massive error, because there is a concept of continuous movement. classic Resident Evil works because it uses "up" direction as always moving forward, "down" as backwards", with "left + right" as rotation. thus, moving through several camera shots, if you are pressing "up (forward)" you will continue in the same direction. The Medium uses 360 movement, so this changes and you will be completely confused as to what was your initial direction of movement. this is literally the worst possible play control and makes this a total mess. in addition, this game's supposed cinematic camera does not follow the most basic rules of cinematography when changing camera angles, NEVER cross the center line without reason because this completely confuses direction sense; this is even WORSE in a game because the player has control instead of the director making sure there is continuity. this is the level of knowledge that a first year film student would learn. absolutely amateur level cinematography. this seems like an interesting game with a solid story, but the mechanics are so completely incompetent that i cannot continue playing it. for shame. go back to game design school and film school, and maybe learn something.

Serious Optimization Issues

This game needs some serious optimization, I have an RTX 2070 Super and had to disable Ray Tracing from the start which made things run smoothly with 4K and all the settings on High for awhile until the game started rendering both worlds, the performance impact was so bad I had to drop it to 1440P and still let DLSS do its scaling to maintain only 30FPS. Resolution below 4K just isn't worth using in my opinion, so much image quality is lost. I don't want to tell people not to buy it because the game is a great concept with a beautiful soundtrack, the atmosphere is stunning but it needs some serious optimization.
