A Deep Dive Into A Foundational Classic

"The Making of Karateka" is the first installment of Digital Eclipse's Gold Master series. It builds off the studio's work on "Atari 50". That collection took a more holistic look at Atari's history, while here the focus is on "Karateka"; a pioneer for cinematic games that has become a foundational influence for many developers; as well as its developer, Jordan Mechner. Digital Eclipse needs to be applauded for the work they've done both here. "The Making of Karateka" is flush with design documents, video retrospectives, developer testimonies and many playable versions of both "Karateka" and the unreleased "Deathbounce." It's a treasure trove of gaming history, one that preservationists and fans of the classics will love.

A classic

I don't own the game anymore but I played Karateka in my childhood. Out of all the games that came out in that era, this is one of the handful of "playable" games despite the tough difficulty and, at times, janky controls. Karateka is a standard Metroidvania genre of game where you go from start to finish-- going from left to right of the TV screen. It has its challenging levels and boss battles but overall they're fair and you finish the game in no time. I would recommend the younger generation to try this game!

Nice package but too expensive for the content...

The "making of" is quite interesting and follows a similar template than the Atari 50 collection. However, even at half the price than the Atari collection, I feel a little bit shortchanged here. The documentary part is quite short (even if quite interesting) and there is basically just one game (either remade or at various stage of its development). A "Jordan Mechner collection" covering at least Karateka and Prince of Persia (both in terms of games available and documentary) for the same price would have been more appropriate. As it is, I recommend it for those interested in gaming history but only if it has a 50% (or more) discount.

I played this

At the time everyone was playing this. Understand at this time were many lame games, which I also loved. This was no exception, But there were exceptions. In this timeframe there were also games that became franchises.. for better or worse. Mostly worse but the reason they became a degenerate cliche was because there was a core of beauty. I played this game to the end on my atari 800xl that I bought by delivering pizza on my moped. It was ok. I will say this about this game: I remember it.
