“Hey I know we haven’t talked in a while…”

Stories for the road

Play through four chapters that capture the essence of everyday life and skip through the snapshots of moments both meaningful and mundane. Take time to experience the beauty in the small things like blowing a dandelion, picking up seashells and riding a bike. There’s no context given in these chapters, you won’t know these characters or their stories, but you can experience moments of time with them and create your interpretations.

“We’re running out of time…”

Songs for the road

An original intimate soundtrack with themes and lyrics that seek the serenity and simplicity of what is known by all of us. Feelings, emotions, situations and perceptions that aren't extraordinary yet define us as human beings, our stories, and how we share our lives with each other.

Each ticket to ride on The Longest Road on Earth includes the soundtrack so you can take the experience with you on your journey.

Experiences for the road

In The Longest Road on Earth there's no challenge that tarnishes the experience, no fail-states to punish you. Players of all ages, levels of ability and backgrounds can take part in the experience with simple controls and a relaxed pace.

“Hey, is it ok if we go back in time to that night…”

A pretty game with a terrible soundtrack

I won't talk about gameplay in this review as there isn't much to say about it. You walk left or right and sometimes you press space, that's it. What I wanted to talk about is what kind of game this is, and why it is it's own worst enemy. What this game really is is a mood piece, it's about telling stories of fleeting moments of everyday life. And in that regard, it does a very good job. It creates this nostalgic, almost melancholy feeling. It's hard to really describe, as I think it very much depends on if the person playing the game is the type that can appriciate very slow story telling, and the types of stories that doesn't really have a "point" or a grand finale. All I can say in that regard is that I think it's a story best enjoyed if you are the type of person that enjoys the type of film a director like Terrance Malik makes (especially his later work). Stories that are about vague allusions towards feelings, mood. About being in a place and time. About existing in the world. However, here we come to the part of the game that I disliked intenstly. And that was the god-awful, car commercial, mallcore tier soundtrack. This soundtrack ruined most of this game for me. Music is such a subjective thing and there are only so many words I can use to describe it, but aside from the occasional instrumental this soundtrack was trash. Overly breathy singing. Lyrics that beat you over the head about how you should feel, lyrics that sometimes would be cringe-inducing in their sappyness. What I think this game would benefit from would be a mode that has no music, only ambient sound. The sound of footsteps, the wind, the sounds of the city and so on. There are a few scenes in this game like that, but the majority is taken up by music and singing that you would hear in a vapid motivational video on instagram. It's that bad. I want to like this game but it decides it rather wants to ruin it self with some of the worst music I have heard. Wasted potential.

Everyday moments

I agree that this is not for everyone. If you get it expecting some kind of "adventure" game, you'll hate it. But if you carefully read its description, that's exactly what you get: moments of everyday life, watch your surroundings, no context, no challenges. And this is exactly what this is about. Because you experience small moments out of context, it is you who must give a context to those moments. If you can wonder why are they there, how do they feel, what have been their stories so far, maybe, just maybe, you will be able to enjoy the ride. Sometimes it's so pixelated that you can't figure out what are they really doing, so you let your imagination fly a little more. This is a very minimalistic work. Graphics are blocky, there is no structure, time just happens. It is so simple that I felt thrilled when two of the characters crossed their paths. And a big point: the songs are very beutiful. They alone are worth what this costs. And more.

Emotions in a Bottle

Not a usual game… in all of its facettes. The Longest Road on Earth is a musical (?) kinetic (?) adventure (?) game (?) which blew me away and made me cry. It's two hours, three tops if you need a break because your eyes are watery suddenly… it's gorgeous… very very special. Lovely experience.

Not bad if you know what to expect.

This is based off the demo which you can check out for free. In essence this is a 2D walking simulator with no narrative and no dialogue, text or context. You hold left or right and occasionally hit space to interact with something. If you're looking for gameplay, you won't find it here. What you will find is something resembling a laid back slice-of-life visual novel that gives you a setting that you create your own context and little stories for. It's by no means a deep philosophical experience but it works better than I expected. The pixel art is nice, the music is somewhat cheesy and not something I normally listen to but I think it fits quite well. I think €10 is a bit much but I'll pick it up on a discount. It's simple but relaxing, and again the demo is free so you can check it out and see if it's something you enjoy before spending anything.
