Description
Among the nations on the Zemurian continent, the mighty Erebonian Empire has been quick to outwardly stake its claim militarily; yet politically, ugly bouts of internal conflict between the upper class and commoners attempting to rise to power have been steadily intensifying day by day. The Noble and Reformist Factions have been none too kind to one another over the years, and tensions between the two only stand to worsen if compromises aren’t made in the very near future.

Rean Schwarzer, like any other citizen of the Imperial Nation, is no stranger to these rising conflicts: the class system has been deeply embedded into the hearts of every Erebonian since the days of old. As a seventeen-year-old student preparing for his new life at Thors Military Academy, however, he notices that his crimson uniform differs from the standard ones issued to his peers—typically green for commoners, and white for nobles.

Enter, Class VII of Thors Military Academy. For the first time in the prestigious academy’s history, rank means nothing and skill means everything. With nine hand-picked students of various backgrounds and abilities, Rean included, Class VII readies itself to dive deep into the political quagmire that threatens not only them, but the Empire as a whole.

Taking place on the same continent as the fan favorite Trails in the Sky offshoot of Nihon Falcom’s storied The Legend of Heroes franchise, Trails of Cold Steel (Sen no Kiseki in Japanese) is the first in the series to tread Erebonian soil and explore the inner political conflicts of this oft-mentioned powerhouse nation in detail. Delve into the expansive lore that has become synonymous with the series, enjoy school life and bond with fellow students to earn new abilities in battle, take advantage of speedy, tactical turn-based combat with the newly-developed “ARCUS” system, and uncover dramatic events that stand to change everything these two opposing social classes stand for.
  • A World Rich in Depth for Veterans and Newcomers Alike
The events of Trails of Cold Steel are expertly told so that longtime Trails veterans and casual RPG fans alike can equally enjoy its detailed, highly nuanced storyline.

  • New Link System Adds Depth to Combat
Take advantage of the Combat Link System by bonding with your allies throughout the school year, netting you a variety of combat benefits including healing, guarding and more.

  • A Sleek Update to a Classic Growth Mechanic
Trails of Cold Steel streamlines the classic “Orbment” magic system from previous titles with new “ARCUS” units, allowing for more ready access to abilities and quicker customization.

  • Experience the Game as Never Before
50% more lines of English voice-overs have been added to the PC release, bringing a fresh experience to even those who have played it before on console.

Lack of auto-saving + crashing = waste

It's a good game overall, but it crashes after epic 40-minute long battles, forcing you to restore your game to do it all over again and hope it doesn't crash, so I can't really recommend it.

Big Waste of Time

I stopped playing after 40 hours... forty hours!! Why? The whole game was just plain boring. It felt like a big waste of time. Friends kept saying, it's very slow, but it'll be worth it. I cannot say, that I don't like the characters. It's just, that I don't have that much time for nothing...

A shallow, mediocre Persona wannabe

If you want a high-school anime JRPG, stick with Persona. If you want a spritual successor to Trails in the sky... I am so sorry. Any comparisons to Trails in the Sky are meaningless. Yes it takes place in the same universe, even some of the old characters show up, yes even the battle system is more or less the same. But in essence it is an entirely different game. Gone are the Bracers, now you have to deal with a bunch of high school student drama. Riveting. Take any run of the mill anime and you have the characters of ToCST. From the clueless personality lacking protagonist to the petulant blond tsundere, the whole gang's here. One of the earliest scenes has the main guy accidently land on the blond girl's boobs for, ahem, "comedic" effect. As scene so infamously cliche to bad anime that even people who never watch anime make fun of it. And it is played with no irony or self-awareness in ToCS. This is how unabashedly lame the writing is. The dialogue itself is uninvolving and meandering. I don't know if this is a localization issue or if everyone talks like a robot in the original as well, but it is painful to sit through lines and lines of text that ultimately could have been summed up in a single sentence. The most positive feature by far is the turbo button to speed up the game, because don't think for a second that you can easily skip these cutscenes. Oh you will listen to Machias and Jusus bitch at each other for the millionth time whether you like it or not. The plot itself is such a wasted oppurtunity. The premise of nobles VS commoners could have been really interesting. A story about class war? Sure, sign me up. But it is dealt with in the most shallow of ways. Every conflict boils down to nobles being snooty a-holes and commoners being spineless doormats. AND WHAT IS WRONG WITH EVERYONE'S BOOBS?? Clothes do not work that way!!

An unwelcome change to the series

I want to write this review to let people know what they're in for, because for me Trails of Cold Steel was a huge letdown, and if you're like me then you'd prefer to not spend the money finding it out just how much of a different type of game this is from the original Trails In The Sky. The main critique I have with the game is that it is, in essence, a high school anime. Your characters are students at a prestigious military academy in Erebonia, which just so happens to be like every Japanese High School ever. This is such a bizarre decision to my mind. But it's not the fact that it takes place in a high school that makes me dislike it, it's that it becomes a high school anime game. It is watered down Persona, without the interesting look into psychology and sociology. We are treated to the kind of tropes high school anime makes you familiar with: Guy does something totally innocent that happens to put him on top of a girl, girl acts like he just molested her. Yeah, and it never goes away, it's something that lasts for the rest of the game when it happens in the first act. You've got the whole maid character who you are somehow supposed to be amazed by and is somehow crazy powerful and one step ahead of everything character, you have the obnoxious teacher who doesn't know what they're doing and drinks, and many, many more. And yet all of that wouldn't matter as much but for the fact that the main caste, the playable characters, are all a bit simple, a bit shallow. And part of this comes from being typical high school anime stereotypes, but more than anything is comes from how many of them there are. There's something like 12 total, which means there's just not enough time or creative talent to give each of them a good, deep personality and to explore that in the game. It also makes it frustrating to play the game when your party keeps rotating out people with only the MC as standard. If you like this sort of thing, you will like this game. If not, reconsider.

Trails of Cold Boredom

Bland, stereotypical, slow and boring expression of the sad state of actual JRPG. PROS: - Visuals (on high settings) - Textures (aside from terrain) - Combat CONS: - Story (military settings is just a setup for boring school chores and fetch-quests) - Story progress (same fetch quest loop multiplied on different towns) - Character stereotypes (especially female misrepresentation) - Dialogues - Dungeon and landscape design (almost as bad as Tales of Berseria) The game doesnt get the lowest score as it doesnt have frustrating mechanics, game breaking bugs or difficulty spikes but it remains an expensive bland and not worthwhile JRPG that is cut short on the finale, asking for more money to continue the chore in the next title. Not worth on sale. Not worth your time.
