Description
Among the nations on the Zemurian continent, the mighty Erebonian Empire has been quick to outwardly stake its claim militarily; yet politically, ugly bouts of internal conflict between the upper class and commoners attempting to rise to power have been steadily intensifying day by day. The Noble and Reformist Factions have been none too kind to one another over the years, and tensions between the two only stand to worsen if compromises aren’t made in the very near future.

Rean Schwarzer, like any other citizen of the Imperial Nation, is no stranger to these rising conflicts: the class system has been deeply embedded into the hearts of every Erebonian since the days of old. As a seventeen-year-old student preparing for his new life at Thors Military Academy, however, he notices that his crimson uniform differs from the standard ones issued to his peers—typically green for commoners, and white for nobles.

Enter, Class VII of Thors Military Academy. For the first time in the prestigious academy’s history, rank means nothing and skill means everything. With nine hand-picked students of various backgrounds and abilities, Rean included, Class VII readies itself to dive deep into the political quagmire that threatens not only them, but the Empire as a whole.

Taking place on the same continent as the fan favorite Trails in the Sky offshoot of Nihon Falcom’s storied The Legend of Heroes franchise, Trails of Cold Steel (Sen no Kiseki in Japanese) is the first in the series to tread Erebonian soil and explore the inner political conflicts of this oft-mentioned powerhouse nation in detail. Delve into the expansive lore that has become synonymous with the series, enjoy school life and bond with fellow students to earn new abilities in battle, take advantage of speedy, tactical turn-based combat with the newly-developed “ARCUS” system, and uncover dramatic events that stand to change everything these two opposing social classes stand for.
  • A World Rich in Depth for Veterans and Newcomers Alike
The events of Trails of Cold Steel are expertly told so that longtime Trails veterans and casual RPG fans alike can equally enjoy its detailed, highly nuanced storyline.

  • New Link System Adds Depth to Combat
Take advantage of the Combat Link System by bonding with your allies throughout the school year, netting you a variety of combat benefits including healing, guarding and more.

  • A Sleek Update to a Classic Growth Mechanic
Trails of Cold Steel streamlines the classic “Orbment” magic system from previous titles with new “ARCUS” units, allowing for more ready access to abilities and quicker customization.

  • Experience the Game as Never Before
50% more lines of English voice-overs have been added to the PC release, bringing a fresh experience to even those who have played it before on console.

Amazing Jrpg - no dual audio

I will say this right now, I have not been so preocupied with a game nay, an an rpg in many many years. the only jrpgs that I was this invested in was the persona series and smt nocturne. if you love those game, you will LOVE this game. great story, great gameplay, great presentation and if you're a weeb like me, this is a must buy. there are alot of people that will buy this amazing game and be dissapointed that has no dual audio. I for one was very dissapointed as well. luckily xseed has made it very easy for you to manually mod the japanese va's back in the game. to get the japanese voices, all you gotta do is go too falcom's discord server and look in the community section. you will find a mega link that has the files you need to mod the game and it is very easy to do so. you WILL have to have a dicord account to do this however and I don't know if the links were posted outside of the discord. back to the game, it's fantastic and you will really enjoy it. these games apparently take place in the trials of sky series but the games do a good job a straying away from that main plot of the whole series so you do not need to play older entries in the series before you play this unless you really, REALLY love the lore. fie is best girl. review over.

Taking HUUUGE steps backwards

TBH there are many things that make this game the WORSE Trails/Kiseki game and a weak JRPG. So let's list them: - Cast of protagonists seems to be taken out from a Light Novel, the generic protagonist with black long hair, the richest "tsundere" blond girl, the smart mystique girl with glasses and big boobs, the loli assassin with grey short hair, etc. If you have seen a popular harem anime or anything similar then you'll get it. -But since it's a Falcom game then they give characters tridimensionality, by exaggerating or by adding 0.5cm of depth. Stories such as "I had a tragedy so I am like this", or " that's how I was raised" are common among the protagonist and some of them are just there for a filler. -So choose wisely your favorite team because you won't have time to know them after since the game is divided in 7 chapters and through chap 1-6 you will do the SAME thing, there's a formula and you will repeat over and over again. As you expect in chap 7 they change the formula and "the true Trails of Cold Steel starts here" -Which shows that the storytelling is awful. Those BASIC rules of conventional story structure you saw in school are ditched(exposition, conflict, rising action, climax, and denouement). You know the ones that Trails in the Sky FC USED! I know i was too hard but as an underdog fan of Trails games back in 2011 and a player I can't stand how they ruined their 10yo franchise and put waifus, anime troopes and bad writing just to sell, specially with a game series that praises itself for being so heavy storied and epic. The game had it's good moments such as boss fights or dungeon exploration but as soon the moment finishes you return to earth. As a fan I give it a 1/10, as a player 5/10, just like a Neptunia game; great concept, POOR execution. The 2 stars are for the ADHOC Ys-ish music and the effort put into porting the game from PS3 to PC.

Suprisingly good

So after playing Persona 4 and 5 I've been looking for some similar games. And after some research I did on the internet, this game was my choice. Let me start with the negative aspects of the game: The story and the pacing are way too boring and slow. While there might be some interesting events, it just takes to long to unfold. The combat system is nothing special too. It's your typical turn-based-jrpg-combat-system, however it has its own flair. Now the strongest aspect of the game: The cast! I instantly fell in love with the characters. They are simply great. Each of them is distinguishable and that is the strongest aspect of the game. All those characters and their stories is what kept me engaged and what makes me want to buy the sequel!

Another good entry into this series...

TL:DR A solid story driven JRPG and I truly hope the entire series gets localized. I did enjoy this game overall, but there are a few things keeping me from giving it a completely glowing review. I really did enjoy trials in the sky 1&2 for it's emphasis on story. This game is still arguably story driven but, while both series seem to be linear rpg's, cold steel's structure is very repetitive. It fits within the context of the school setting but I wish they had mixed up the formula. I suppose it comes down ultimately to my fatigue with Japanese Highschool slice of life plots. I did enjoy the world building. I was hoping for some reveals of the factional disputes but I feel like I had more questions than answers at the end. My main worry being character motivations. I'm sure it get fleshed out in the squeals. I'm just worried that they've made such a tangled web that a lot of things will be just hand waved away with plot contrivance for the sake of drama. Cliff hanger ending is all well and good but honestly the two back stories I was most interested in, for the MC and main antagonist, are not in this game. In the case of the former a chunk of it was excluded from the game and instead revealed in a Drama CD. In the latter's case it would have spoiled the reveal of their identity so that's understandable, and a slight nod to their motivation is given but it felt to impersonal for the level of vitriol this character has. But my biggest complaint towards the antagonist is that their machinations feel a bit unnecessary in light of the card they had for 3 yrs. That all said, these complaints might be dispelled as further games are released and the storyline fleshed out. But if this game were a book then this would serve better as a first act than a book on it's own. And that's probably intentional but ultimately a weakness imo. I didn't really like the diminishing returns on grinding. I don't like it when it's necessary either but..

A Great RPG on it's on.

What can I say about this game? It has incredible worldbuilding, like with it's predecessor, has a fun combat system, the story really makes you interested and wanting more (hell, I've played this during and entire weekend from morning to night and I still didn't finished, and wanted more). As an RPG, on it's on, it's a must play by everyone. 5/5 stars. ...That said, when you compare to it's predecessor (trails in the sky, and i'm talking just about the First chapter, btw) the story just can't compare. I really got annoyed by the MC, and I specially didn't liked the school setting when you compare with the Bracers setting (even more so when the class adopts a style similar to the bracers one [it is even mentioned by the characters]). The side characters (with a few exceptions) are INCREDIBLE, have fun personalities, we see them develop more and more during the whole game, and we see them mature and change their views. Rean feels similar from the beginning to the end, and for some reason, he is always involved when something needs to be resolved (I'm talking about the relations of the classmates, not the story in general). It more or less feels like he is the center of everything. In Trails in the sky, Estelle is the main character, but isn't the center of everything. she has things she can't see, that the other companions do. While it sounds like i'm criticizing the game a lot, this is just what I feel when I compare to my favorite game of all that, Trails in the sky. on it's on, Trails of Cold Steel is waaaaaaaaaay better than a lot of RPG's that appeared on the market. But what about the score? Comparing Cold Steel with Trails in the sky, I can give a 4 out of 5 rating. Most of the stuff I've said isn't all that bad, but just a small part of things that I've got REALLY frustrated (a lot of stuff like this appears in other RPG's, but there I can accept easily, but with legend of heroes, It's something that stands out a lot since I know they can do better)
