Description
Modern society owes much to a mystical technology known as “orbal energy.” Fifty years ago, during what’s come to be known as the “Orbal Revolution,” the invention of this technology and the “orbments” developed from it led to a period of rapid human advancement, birthing innovations of all shapes and sizes -- not the least of which was the airliner, or “orbalship” industry. Although the positive impact of this revolution is obvious, every coin has a flipside; for every beneficial device developed with these new materials, so too were advanced weapons and other implements of war. Thus, the land became mired with turmoil, and remains in such a state even now.

Enter, the bracers: an organization established to serve as police and intermediaries alike, holding above all else the peace and safety of the lands under their jurisdiction. Whenever a citizen is in need of assistance, he or she may place a request at the local Bracer Guild -- and be it monster extermination, crime prevention or even peace talks among warring nations, the bracers will do whatever they can to resolve the matter cleanly and efficiently.

Some matters require a gentler touch than others, however. When an orbalship transporting a legendary "S-rank" bracer named Cassius Bright suddenly goes missing, said bracer's daughter, Estelle, and adoptive son, Joshua, must join forces in search of him across the entire Kingdom of Liberl.

And what they find along the way could change both of their lives forever...

Hailed as one of the largest, longest and most meticulously detailed turn-based JRPG series of all time, this first chapter in the ongoing Trails saga sets the stage for what's quickly become Ys developer Nihon Falcom's most popular and best-selling franchise in their entire 30+ year history. Introducing people, places, ideas, events and lore that rival in complexity those of even the most highly-regarded fantasy epics in literature, the care and attention given to each and every NPC, location and historical in-game event is what sets The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky apart from its contemporaries.

Come join Estelle, Joshua, Scherazard, Olivier and the rest of the cast as they uncover the secret underbelly of Liberl in their first 50+ hour masterpiece, and see what Japanese gamers have been raving about for over ten years.
  • Classic JRPG with over 50 hours of gameplay, strategic turn-based combat, and countless side-quests.
  • A vast world where every NPC has a name and personality, every town has its own unique politics and economic concerns, and no detail is ever trivial.
  • Widescreen and USB gamepad support, selectable difficulty and new game+ features.

Broken Port

The game is good, but I kept encountering a bug where seemingly every other day, for half the day, my saves would disappear and be replaced with old saves. I turned off the GOG Cloud Saves, and the issue persisted. I was about to uninstall the game and just give up when I noticed, several hours later, that the saves had reappeared. This would continue to reoccur about every other day throughout my playthrough. My wife played the PSP version on her Vita and never encountered an issue. Perhaps if you really want to play it, that's a better route. However, no one else seems to be having this issue, so maybe the game just hates me.

The beginning of an epic

This is the starting point of a tremendous continuing saga in JRPG, though for English players only playing the first game will be quite disappointing in most likilihood, the story's true scope and the many character's colorfulness isn't really explored until the second installment,

Unique JRPG

Combat system is simple, but full of tactics. Very interesting story, many side quests, great music.

don't go there

... seems to be the grand theme of the storyline progression in this game. Hawk52 gives a grand review, to which I have precious little to add. He correctly states that to enjoy the story you have to backtrack a lot... which is true, but actually even worse: In fact, in order to complete all sidequests in order to reach your highest guild rank, you either - have to consult a guide in order not to miss anything - or go anywhere but your story target. Seriously, once you enter a new area and the chars tell you to head for city X, visit any and all other villages/hamlets/lighthouses/whatever in order to trigger a quest which might otherwise vanish because you inadvertently progressed the story. (Of course, once you later visit said village/hamlet/etc. for the official storyline, the party goes "ooh, seeing this for the first time, how pretty.") Many people praise the great character development... for me, Estelle started out as a dunce and stayed that way. Josh started as an annoying know-it-all even without the decency to be arrogant about it and stayed that way. And his secret is not revealed step by step thru the story, but at the very very very end after the final boss battle. So, no, cannot agree on that. My low score is definitively not deserved, the game is by no means bad. It's just not so great as most people make it out to be, either. So someone has to lower the average rating to an acceptable degree... so sue me!

Pure love

Never before have I fallen so in love with a jrpg so fast. And this comes from someone who is a fan of the genre.
