About

Experience Crossbell in this exciting chapter from the renowned The Legend of Heroes series! The site of an ongoing territorial struggle between the Erebonian Empire and the Republic of Calvard, Crossbell has developed into a prosperous city-state and one of the continent’s leading economic centers.

After three years away from his hometown, Lloyd Bannings returns in order to follow his late brother's footsteps and join the Crossbell Police Department. However, when he arrives, he finds he's been assigned to the Special Support Section, a new division that handles odd jobs and minor requests. He meets his new teammates, which include Elie MacDowell, the granddaughter of the city's mayor; Randy Orlando, a womanizing ex-soldier; and Tio Plato, a young tech genius.

Though their department is mocked by the media and looked down on by the rest of the CPD, Lloyd and his friends continue to fight to make their city a better place. As they do, however, they slowly come face-to-face with the criminal corruption gripping their city. Little do they know just how deep the shadows of Crossbell City go...

Classic JRPG

The Trails series can be guilty of anime tropes, but usually the execution is well done enough not to be bothersome. That said, this entry in the series is one of my favorites. It does a great job letting you get to know the city-state Crossbell since the scope is tighter -- you spend most of the game running around the city and its environs -- and the characters all have credible reasons for doing what they do. If anyone is jumping into the series with this game, I strongly recommend you take time to speak with all of the random NPCs standing around after each chapter, because they all have small stories that progress throughout the game. None of its essential, but I've always loved that about this series. I've had a great time playing this, and I'm looking forward to the sequel!

Trails in the Sky 3.5

The first game in the Crossbell duology is...not very good at standing on its own feet. Tellingly, the latest scene before the credits, although incredibly rewarding, is not even about the main heroes. That is not to say Zero is a bad game. Not at all. However, a Trails game where the side characters are more interesting than half of the main cast is a game with some issues. Unsurprisingly, the second game in the duology doubles the party size, while also including three of the most memorable NPCs. The other issue I had with Zero lies on the political side: Crossbell is a contested region between two superpowers where a war is being fought under the table. Given this premise, one would imagine that politics wuold play a major role in the plot of the game, but they do not. In fact, compared to the multiple political agendas of Trails to Azure, politics in Zero feel almost like an afterthought. Which is a shame, because Crossbell is a beautiful city in a game where the main antagonists are only tangentially related to the political intrigue that permeates the whole duology. So...by all means, feel free to try Zero. It is a good game. Just be aware that Zero is a self-contained story, whereas the resolution of Crossbell's issues, and its consequences, will be found in the next game, Trails to Azure.
