Description
It’s the year 1400- the late Middle Ages. Europe sees the dawn of the golden age of the new departures and the free spirit. Under the rule of the bourgeoisie and businessmen, more and more towns are emerging from the clutches of the aristocracy and are achieving independence, power and wealth. New businesses are flourishing, bringing financial strength and political influence to a growing economy.

However, life in the narrow, overpopulated alleyways and streets of the towns also has its downsides: epidemics and diseases are spreading, and thieves and highwaymen lie in wait to get their piece of the wealth. Now you can try your hand in these exciting times of change. Will you head down the path of an honest craftsman or a dubious priest? It’s your choice.

Excellent game based on the German Apprenticeship system

This game is out of Austria and is based on the apprenticeship system here in Germany. Too bad we don't adopt it there in the US. Anyhow, this is a truly excellent game! I've never played this in English, so I will have to sort of translate what I know from German into my mother tongue. You choose a town to start in and a task - or free play. You can also choose to have the news be historical or randomized, etc. Each town has more or less space to build new establishments, as well as various difficulty levels. You choose your first and last name, your gender and your religion. You may then choose your mother and father's profession and allot a few extra points to your 5 skills. There are 5 possible fathers and 4 mothers. The mothers are: thief, poet, craftswoman or trader. The fathers are the same, but include a soldier. The skills affect your bargaining skills, crafting of products, rhetoric, thieving/assassin abilities and fighting skills. Each of the classes available for your parents influences these various skills as well. You also get to choose the avatar that will represent you. Lastly, you choose your profession. There is a tutorial available from the main menu. I would recommend using it the first time you play. You will start with a business and a house. Which business you start with is determined by your profession. The list of professions is much more detailed here than in the Guild 2. You can buy better titles for your family (this will be conferred upon all family members). Your title dictates the level of house you can have. Each level of house and business adds additional advantages. Choose your partner with care. When your husband or wife dies, you inherit all of their properties and money IF they did not have children before they married you. Try to pick a partner from whom you can get children!! If they do not like you much, you will not get children. You can use a poem on your partner periodically if necessary to get them to like you better. The advent of children is not within your control in this game. Guild 2 has given you some control over this. If you die, you will be prompted to continue the game with one of your children. They must be at least 13 years old. Why? The old laws here in Germany allowed a person to take work as of 14 years old. You still only have to have 9 years of schooling here to get the lowest level high school diploma and start an apprenticeship - even with the recent changes to the school system. If you never have tried the challenge of marrying 5 times within one lifetime, I highly recommend it! It is great fun!!! :-) This is considered a very hard task when choosing your tasks in starting a new game.

Even now

Even in 2020 this game is valid for those who can live with lesser graphics. Nevertheless the game goes to great lengths to deny you property but willingly hands it to the opponents within the same turn. So yeah, great game, but some things do not make sense at all.

Addicition in a box

Where to start? The depth of this game is incredible..... You play someone that has just arrived to a town with little resources and need to build an empire. It's the players preference how exactly they do this. There are professions as wide ranging from gravedigger to international trader to smith to publican to... well you get the idea. Eventually you will have a self sustaining business and once you reach the top of your profession (ability is divided up into 10 levels allowing upgrades of the business as level progresses) you can choose to go into another profession or politics. The political game is one of intrigue and back stabbing - more than once I bribed a senior to give me a position and then called a vote to kick him/her out to get their spot for myself.... Of course whilst all this is happening your character is getting older all the time. Eventually he will inevitably die and if you desire to play on an heir is essential. Right from the outset you can woo a bride of your choice - indeed most players would suggest it is advisable to do so. If you manage to wed someone far above your station in wealth when she/he dies you will inherit that. It may sound slightly callous but rich, old potential spouses are a great way to get some initial wealth and titles under your belt /cough When you do pass on the mantle to the next generation they arrive with all the ranks of profession of the ancestor intact so eventually it is possible to become the highest level master in all professions... it would take several generations however. As mentioned before it is possible to get involved in the political arena of the game. Given the cost and time needed to seriously progress in this direction it is advisable to have a network of business/properties generating plenty of action points and money each turn. It is worth pursuing however as high ranks of office give real benefits such as being able to declare laws, act as a judge or even become immune to charges from your enemies.... Even after all this text I have, to be honest, barely scratched the surface of this game. The only minor issue I have encountered is do not choose a historical campaign if you want to be an international trader. A bug exists that does not show the international cities in a historical campaign.... oh and prepare to lose many hours as you just try to accomplish one more thing...

A lost gem

I played the hell out of the original release, Europa 1400 - The Guild, and immediately followed up to buy The Guild 2 when it was released... and then released again with pirates... but have yet to get the latest installment, The Guild - Venice. An excellent geo-political/economic strategy game unlike pretty much anything else on the market. The AI is surprisingly tough, too. Thought you bribed the mayor enough to get that comfy position as (insert comfy position here to which there are plenty) only to discover one of your rival families bribed more than you... Just gotta play it. My only regret is not having ever played online with others. I wonder if we GOGgies can revive that? Hmmm...

What's not to love

For those of you who haven't played The Guild, it is just a masterpiece of a game. The only reason it doesn't get that fifth star is because it can be a tad confusing at times, and the manual nor the tutorial will prepare you for the vast amount of stuff you can do in this game. Become an apprentice, master your trade, open your own business, branch out and do other things, own many buildings...run for governer, kill and sabotage other people's estates, attack other people's caravans...these are only some of the things you can do in this extremely open-ended, well-thought-out game.
