Description
For centuries Europe has been dominated by the church and nobility. On the shoulders of ordinary people the servants of god and the noble families justified their power and wealth. This was the incontrovertible, divine world order. A truly dark era…

In the 14th Century the world order is beginning to transform itself. Due to trade and commerce an increasing middle class obtains more and more power and wealth. Entire towns purchase their freedom and more privileges from the nobility. Reading and writing is no longer the domain of the nobility and the clergy and the invention of printing information may eventually be spread everywhere. This is the beginning of the Renaissance...
  • Eight completely new professions: mercenary, grave digger, stonemason, juggler, innkeeper, banker, miller and the fruit grower.
  • New goods, buildings, ambient details and effects.
  • All new scenarios ("Transylvania", "The Rhineland" and "The Alps") & bigger world maps.
  • Improved AI, title and nobility system as well as new options (e.g. “God Measures”, levels of difficulty).

Impossible to finish a game

The game hates you and wants to get rid of you. From the very beginning until you give up and uninstall, it will fight you tooth and nail to play it. Nothing works. You can save games, sure. However, you might not be able to load them later on, as the game crashes midway through a loading screen. This is completely random and nothing seems amiss until the actual load. You will never know, and this will cost you hours of your life replaying the same parts over and over again. The game crashes from time to time, completely randomly, with no heads up. Hope you've saved. Hope your saves work! The game also slows down randomly, due to graphical problems. On modern computers with good hardware. *Nothing* ingame is ever explained. You *need* to have the wikis and steam pages and gamefaqs open to look up *everything*. Nothing makes *any* logical sense. Sometimes it's bugged, sometimes it's bad design. The AI is hopelessly bugged. - The actions in the game sometimes won't work. You give a command, the unit ignores it. You give the command again, the unit is now confused and stands there doing nothing, whilst switching between the action you gave it and no action at all. I found a solution that sometimes worked, which was to pause the game, select the command and wait for 5 seconds for the game to recognize it, then spam the command 4-5 times before unpausing. - The pathing is impossible to predict and makes no sense. You are on a road, you click your guy to walk along it 5 yards. He turns around, walks 20 yards the wrong direction, turns around again and walks out into the woods, circles the woods and goes back to the road, crosses it, walks around a farm on the other side, then stops because the command bugs out and you gotta do the paus trick to get him working again. - You can't group command, you gotta do single unit commands. You are able to target several units at once and you are able to click the command button for them, but only one or two of them will react.

Average game

First of all, the game has some technical issues. Even on modern computers can sometimes work slow and lag. Secondly, it's far too easy. Played on hard difficulty and never had problem with other famillies: they didn't exploit my weaknesses and were outgunned in terms of money, influence and manpower. It's also easy to make a bucket of gold, you even don't have to possess efficient business, just go to local counting house, buy overseas goods and sell them on the market for higher price. Getting into politics is cool but when you are there, there's nothing much to do. Only the highest office brings some fun but even then it quickly wears off. You can get excited about random events but after some time it's just another annoyance. The whole courtship and romance stuff is tedious: you spam combo of "gift- hug" or "gift- kiss" until the chosen of your heart falls in love with you. There should be at least some dancing and swordplay involved like in Sid Meier's Pirates!- something more than sims-like emote mashing. What's good about it you may ask. Well there are different angles of approach to business thing: you can be a farmer, a smith, a loan shark, an innkeeper etc. You also start as a local and petty "spoon dealer" and eventually can take over your village, town, city or even the kingdom. The game is fun but, in my opinion, only for a limited time. Then it becomes quite repetitive and a chore to play.

Rattrap

By far the most promising and less offering game I've ever played: simple mechanics work, deep mechanics do not, as it is ridden with bugs. I've spent more time on forums figuring out how to do things (tutorial is ridiculous), how to avoid bugs (they're like everywhere) and how to install homemade fixing modpacks by other frustrated players than actually playing. Its developers have the bad habit of releasing beta if not alpha versions of games that never see the light and asking for money in advance too (see the third chapter of this saga ). It's a pity: if only a serious vg firm would develop this concept it could be a success. Until then, keep out.

Heartbreaking

This could have been one of the biggest hits of the decade, if not the century, but it's practically unplayable without mods, and even with mods it's a struggle. Some mechanics don't seem to work at all, moving around is clunky and unpleasant, the entire in-game economy can just collapse on itself at any moment during your campaign. I almost feel like crying thinking about the wasted potential here, because, honestly, the core concept of the game is so unique and interesting, there's literally nothing like it on the market to this day. It's a perfect mix of RPG, management and trading sim. It's like if Sword of the Samurai had a baby with the Sims and it was raised by The Settlers. It could have been a genre defining masterpiece, but it ended up in a bargain bin with a bunch of 1 star reviews. The biggest tragedy is that The Guild 3 could have redeemed this franchise, but it came out just as unfinished and broken as 1 & 2. No publisher will ever even touch this franchise again, so there's no hope for salvation...

Really really fun

It's a business management game on the style of the Patrician series, but being able to develop and use your own character, and choose any career of your choice, adds a special touch to the game.
