Description
The First Tree is a third-person exploration game centered around two parallel stories: a fox trying to find her missing family, and a son reconnecting with his estranged father in Alaska. Players take control of the fox on a poignant and beautiful journey that crescendos at the source of life, and perhaps result in an understanding of death. Along the way, players can uncover artifacts and stories from the son's life as he becomes intertwined in the fox’s journey towards The First Tree.
  • Not a "fox simulator," but an emotional, intimate story by a one-man team with an ending you won't soon forget.
  • Featuring a gorgeous, orchestral soundtrack by acclaimed artists like Message to Bears, Lowercase Noises, and Josh Kramer.
  • A short story-driven game (about 2 hours long) with some light puzzle solving, platforming, and no enemies.

Absolutely beautiful

I do not review games much, but some of the bad reviews here have just let me to do it. I feel the games is absolutely beautiful. Simple, beautiful soundtrack, exploration, great feeling of freedom - jumps from cliffs to catch start just feel like a demonstration of freedom. I do not feel the game is empty, for me it seems simple but genius - it has a zen-like feeling of space and freedom. Exploration, beautiful, personal tale - I always ignored the hidden pieces of conversation, or memos in games (like in Dishonored) since it was usually too crowded, but here, it is the game. The game has so many beautiful details (like talking about pranks and at the same moment having a rocket thrown somewhere in the landscape). It is an a deep, personal story, an exploration into unconsciousness done with solid precision. I absolutely cannot understand how someone can write something as insensitive as "philosophical narrative is simply retarded". To me it strikes a deep not and I love it. And most of all it seems like the story is very personal and likely meant something to the author. Trash talk like belongs inside your head, not to other people. Seriously, go create your own game, I would love to see what you come up with. In all the world filled with too much information, tempo and everything happening at once, I can see that this game feels empty to some people. But to me it is just that it goes against being consumer-ish and putting "retarded" gamification, collection and crafting everywhere, since marketing department told the guys it sells. No flashing lights, lines of zillions of zombies, no advertisments, retarded IAP, just the very simple game and beautiful narrative. It is true to its purpose. It does not sell out. Simple. Lovely. Cute. To the author: Make more of games like this please, and do not let idiotic comments discourage you. Amazing job.

Simple, maybe too simple

This game is more a narrative experience than a game in my opinion. It's about death and mourning. You play a fox looking for her cubs and at the same time you will heard a man's story about his father and is teenage period. The gameplay is the simple you could have : you run, walk, jump and dig up. That is all. There is 6 level to do, each one with the same principle. You have to dig up some things and found the exit. Since you have no indication, you have to find your way out. There are also collectible which you don't really see the utility and the meaning until the very late. I don't know what to think about it. At the same time i found the game quite empty and boring but also calming and peaceful. I think it's because the level are too big and there is not much to do appart from dig up some thing once in a while and found collectible. The atmosphere is well done, the sound design is good, and with you like the DA you will find the game beaufitul even if you can feel the technicals limitation. The music is incredible and the voice acting is really really good. It took me less than three hour to finish. Some blackspot : at some point in the game, you have to activate three rocks. The fact is that you don't know how. You end up clicking and jumping like a madman until something happen. It's repetitive even if you have knew element of gameplay like a double jump each level are the same. There is no way to save manually. You have to do each level in a row because the only save is automatic at the begining of the each level. It's not a game for everyone. Some will be touched by this game and other won't. If you like narrative experience maybe you will like it. If not you will be bored for sure.

Nice but empty...

I do not like to write negative reviews but I probably should as I spent a considerable amount of time trying to understand what this game is about. The graphics looks nice and tidy - the screenshots do not lie. The gameplay is a bit oversimplified and not challenging. Your fox explores large locations hardly containing any points of interest. I guess it is ok for early access but insufficient for a done game. However, the main aspect of this game was supposed to be a story. And this is where a big problem lies. Adventures of the fox fail to connect to any deep and serious questions implied by the game. An entire playthrough does not give enough hints to make logical conclusions about what is going on, let alone to discover the original idea. The pseudo-philosophical narrative feels simply retarded. Although I presume that the author originally had a reasonable idea in mind, it was not reflected in the game. Apparently, even the developer himself saw that something is not right here and therefore added some audio comments about the development process, which are the most interesting thing in the game from my point of view.

I got this on sale, it's the first pgame that i purchase for my kid (3yo) in order too teach him how to play /use a controller and have some fun together he love the fox, likes to double jump but until now in +- 10 session ( 10 - 20 min each) we never went further thant the first part since the gaame has no save option. it will only save when you reach anothe rlevel /part of the game according to what i found online it's a little negative point for me but not a deal breaker

Not what we expected great for beginners

This game really caught me and my wife by surprise. We honestly had no idea what it was about going into it. No trailers, no description just started it up and wow. (to be clear: we got it as part of a pack of games) The game is really deep (emotionally) and THE MUSIC, it is outstanding. The gameplay is super simple although my wife struggled and it was entertaining (gameplay of first 2 levels: youtube.com/watch?v=POxRx3WK5X4 Honestly, we enjoyed the game, my wife is a newer gamer and I basically did backseat gaming with her. The story is about death, and grieving and coming to terms with loss. It's emotional and it's so satisfying for anyone in a relationship because we hear the thoughts from the wife's perspective later on and we were again surprised and excited by that. If you like your feelings to be jerked and you like to get deep into a story without alot of hard gameplay you should try this game. Note: The content of this game is probably about 2-4 hours long. So it is a short game, in my opinion, but still profound.
