Yuri Visual Novel

The Expression Amrilato is a girl meets girl yuri visual novel.

This visual novel is for people who like:
  • Subtle love-like feelings between girls.
  • Just watching cute girls having fun.
  • A touching story that will make you cry.

Story

Rin was just buying a snack in her hometown’s shopping district — but she gets a shock when her surroundings suddenly transform.

"...Why is the sky pink...?"

She should know this area well, but the unreadable letters on the signs and the strange language the people are speaking have made things unrecognizable.

...Just then, Ruka, a girl so cute she could be an idol, appears and extends a helping hand.

Rin, who exudes positivity in spades, and Ruka, a supportive girl who speaks only a smattering of Japanese.

This is the story, pure and sometimes frustrating, of two girls intertwined through their fumbling efforts to communicate.

In-depth Alternate World Language

In "The Expression Amrilato", the main character is lost in an alternate world where Juliamo (which in the real world is Esperanto, an existing constructed language.) is the official spoken language.

Therefore, while enjoying a story between cute girls, you can also learn the Esperanto language!

The text in this game has been officially supervised by the National Esperanto Association in Japan.

You additionally might be able to learn Japanese in the Japanese version included in the package, as well as Chinese in the Chinese version planned in the near future!?

Game System

  • Study Esperanto through the quiz-oriented Study Mode.
  • The Study Mode can be played on its own as a review.
  • If you want to prioritize the story, you can just set the quizzes as "Homework"
  • After clearing the game, you can select if you want to display the Esperanto translation as subtitles or not.

So you want to learn a meme language...

Well, you can certainly do worse than Esperanto. Esperanto draws most of its lexicon from Latin and Romance languages with a decent number of Germanic-rooted words thrown in. So you're at least learning a lot of the same roots you would with, say, Spanish or other Romance languages. So it beats Klingon or Logban in practical terms. The game itself does a good job of introducing you to the basics. I am a bit puzzled by the choice to use a highly stylized script, however, since it adds to the learning difficulty a bit (I do like it aesthetically). Thankfully, that can be switched off to the standard 'Latin with hats' script that is traditionally used for Esperanto. The (few) characters are charming; backgrounds are overused a tad, but the story is good enough to keep you hooked for at least one go. As a VN, it's better than average; as an edutainment game, it gets high marks.

A good story w/ lot of language learning

I really like the story, but I don't like how much time I need to be able to go through much of the learning parts. You will be learning Esperanto with a different letter system which you can change in the settings menu. I would recommend having google translate handle because it improves you ability to understand everything. I would not recommend this for people that just want to kick back and read a story because this is pretty involved mentally. I already learned how to read or hear up to 4 digit numbers in Esperanto, but the questions are a Nightmare. I'm still going through the story, but I need to take breaks because it feels like I am going through class every now and then. Will be updating when I finish this. Learning so much takes time.

Good VN and Learning Experience

This is a good VN. It has a typical story as far as that with a unique twist in that the main characters can't communicate with each other. This game shows the struggles of how to communicate with someone without speaking the same language but also teaches the language Esperanto within the game. It is a very unique game because of this, and if you have an interest in learning a new language, I highly recommend this game.

Story: Garbage. Esperanto: Great

I think if you're the kind of person to regularly read Visual Novels, especially Japanese Visual Novels, then this review probably isn't for you. Japanese stories are notorious for being poorly written with incredibly shallow main characters and The Expression Amrilato fits right in. This VN is atrocious. The characters are extremely typical Japanese characters, ones you'd find in any anime or light novel/web novel. The Main Character is borderline paranoid schizophrenic having anxiety attacks over issues she herself creates. The romance character, Ruka, is some 14 year old lives-on-her-own Mary Sue caricature of a real person. She's an idea made flesh and is as deep as a cardboard cut-out. The writing is inconsistent. Sometimes it feels like I'm reading a real story, but most of the time it's classic Japanese formula-writing at it's finest. "And here is where the MC freaks out because she has to believe she's utterly incapable of any rational thought, which of course leads to her not even attempting any rational thought. Let's have the next 10 minutes of reading be about her self-induced paranoid anxiety attack." "Here is where the MC has her hand grabbed by the romantic interest. Time to once again go down the schizophrenic rabbit-hole and let the reader be force-fed her delusional inner ramblings that are neither relevant nor interesting." Make absolutely no mistake. If you want to buy this game for the novel aspect I would strongly recommend otherwise. This story is awful. I bought this not having much expectation for the story (and it met that in stunning predictability) but wanting to see how a game would teach Esperanto and I have to say: it's doing that pretty well so far. The lessons are fun, Ruka's voice actor is pleasant to listen to, and while I've dabbled in Eo over the years this is serving as a good consolidation point of resources that I'm using to finally break into the threshold known as 'fluency'. Story: do not buy. Esperanto: maybe worth it
