Description

Antiquarian Thomasina Bateman is writing a book on the barrows of England, documenting the treasures she finds buried within. When an intriguing letter summons her to the small village of Bewlay, tucked away in the remote countryside, she sets off by train with her assistant a day behind.

Upon her arrival, however, the mysterious man who summoned her is nowhere to be found. Her assistant never arrives. A stubborn landowner refuses access to the barrow, and the locals are wary of this woman who is traveling alone and (gasp!) wears trousers.

The excavation of Hob’s Barrow is off to a rocky start. And then Thomasina starts having strange dreams…

  • A dark, complex and evolving storyline featuring interwoven elements from real English folklore.
  • Traditional point and click adventure game puzzles and interactions, with an easy modern interface.
  • A cast of intriguing characters, from suspicious villagers to sickly vicars to lordly landowners, all with their own unique stories and motives.
  • A distinct folk horror tone and grounding.
  • Evocative pixel-art graphics, featuring cut-scenes and engaging animations.
  • A suitably atmospheric original soundtrack from The Machine. The Demon. - one half of the duo behind the award-winning "Football Game" soundtrack.
  • Fiends in the furrows, the smell of damp soil, and a cat or two.

Great concepts executed well

Great game strongly reminiscient of the Wicker Man, most puzzles were thematic and reasonable with only a few exceptions. The art is well done but I think it isn't as creepy as the devs thought, this along with weird distance scaling makes the pixelated artstyle occasionally become a seam in the experience. The story was really well done and whilst some open ended questions were great (MILD SPOILERSfor the rest of paragraph) like the "fair people" who are never explicitly explained, others are frustrating. This includes the fire-jets in the bathroom or the fates of some villagers, like the priest. The presence of Mediterranean languages was great to see as someone with a degree in Classics, but there are occasional errors like the mistaking of a Sigma for an Epsilon. Also the final puzzle I thought originally had to be solved using the Latin poem, which was need though unrealistic for most people, but ultimately I looked it up and you can solve the maze without even reading the poem. I ultimately wish that more English culture was used (MAJOR SPOILER) instead of Abraxas, an old English diety would have felt more focused. It's cool to see the Greco-Roman reveal at the end and it is disorienting to a degree, but I don't think it was the right choice. Overall a great game with minor problems and I'm excited to check out more of the dev's games and will be buying some of the bonus content!

Well worth playing

I love this game. A bit easy maybe, but it's also nice when things move along without hours of thinking about the next step. I'm more about the story & feeling, than hard puzzles. If you are a fan of* the old Lucasarts adventure games(Indy, The Dig), then look no further. *besides all the other games by wadjeteye I'm so glad these type of games are still made, and I look forward to many more in the future.

Nice Point & Click Horror

It's nice atmospheric point & click horror game. The voice acting is superb. The puzzles are rather straightforward and easy. They don't pose any challenge for a seasoned adventurer. The game is not very long (it took me around six hours to beat it). I really liked the setting. The desolate moors of England during Victorian era with horror element is right up to my valley. It made me remember Wuthering Heights and The Hound of the Baskervilles. If you like horror folk tales and point & click adventure games, give this one a try.

Good game with worse ending

You should like this one if you like old pixelart style adventures. The game is some supernatural story settled in 19th century England. The story follows some well known cliches (what doesn't nowadays) but for the most part of it is really enjoyable and the writing is good. It's also not too hard, I completed it without any walkthough. The graphics are a mixed bag. Sometimes really nice, sometimes a bit crude and unrefined, especially in the cutscenes. At some moment in the game you get a very typical Indiana Jones style dungeon with typical puzzles for it - some buttons or levers which need to be pushed in given orders, plates to step upon etc. I enjoyed this part less but it's my personal preference. The ending was a dissapointment for me. To avoid spoilers I'll just say that I expected something else. Or maybe more actual choices in the game that would influence the outcome. It felt to me that at some moment the game was supposed to be bigger and have more branching and later it was rushed to be completed. So a good game with a bad ending, as I said. But I still recomend it to you

A Victorian Gothic

A light hearted humoristic point and click adventure descending into an conclusion as dark as was it written by HP Lovecraft. Not for the faint of heart looking for a rosy tale or a happy end. But absolutely brilliant, the beautiful pixel graphics, the quirky characters, dialogues and puzzles. I loved it! A gift to yourself for those winter nights when the wind whistles snow ghosts outside.
