A returning joke...
This game has become the definition of a running gag. Bethesda has some nerve to basically rerelease the same game over and over again, sprinkling some mods, MODS, to make it look a little bit better. The game itself has been released a long time ago and over praised to a ridiculous degree. It is practically an embodiment of the phrase "wide as an ocean, deep as a puddle". The vanilla experience covers really boring combat system, oversimplified magic, repetitive quests and a world that is bland and monotone. There is very little replay value in a game where you can be ANYONE at the same time. Become the assassin, thief, companion, mage all at once, as nobody cares about your qualifications or affiliations. It's a one big, tasteless sludge. If not for the mods, this game would've died years ago.

Many playthroughs and still enjoying!
I love the Elder Scrolls Universe and look forward to more! Mods make this game amazing! In fact, I would have never thought that I would find a hobby in modding a game other than the game itself, but 15 years later and still enjoying the process! It's not for everyone, but everyone is not for me anyway.

Get it for mods
Skyrim vanilla is a bad RPG and Elder Scrolls, its saving grace being the music and atmosphere, why? Because the game removes and streamlines many features from all previous Elder Scrolls games whilst adding little in terms of meaningful gameplay additions. For example there're only 3 attributes, you can't climb surfaces, no spellmaking, factions are smaller and less important, there are hundreds of reasons why this game is bad. But the mods... THE MODS. Skyrim is the most modded game ever made and you can make the game the most immersive and tailored experience you could possibly have. Turn the game into a Souls-like! A character action game! More realistic combat, LESS realistic combat, your choice! There is, quite literally, a mod for almost anything you can imagine now and with dedicated mod lists and videos you can easily find an experience that suits you. The game goes from bad to top tier when modded. Personally, I recommend the "Do Not Go Gentle" mod list (based off Requiem) because it introduces new mechanics and reworks current ones to make the game feel more like an oldschool, hardcore CRPG whilst providing tons of customisation via the MCM.
