Description
The year is 864 and Tiber Septim has begun his crusade to establish an empire in Tamriel, conquering all who stand in his wake. Though the Redguards of Hammerfell put up a valiant fight, they eventually crumbled to internal mutiny and the might of the Septim forces. Now under Imperial control, the Redguards are kept in line by the oppressive rule of Septim’s retainer, Amiel Richton. It is within this setting that Cyrus, a Redguard mercenary that has travelled Tamriel for over a decade, begins his adventure. Investigating the disappearance of his sister, Iszara, Cyrus is brought back to Hammerfell and thrown into the political intrigue that besets Hammerfell and its inhabitants. In his search for his sister, he must also play his part in this war between the Crowns and the Forebears.

Set 400 years prior to the events of The Elder Scrolls: Arena, Redguard contrasts with the other games in many ways. As a third-person action-adventure game, it removes its RPG gloves and instead focuses on bringing you on an immersive journey through the eyes of Cyrus. If you’ve wanted to try the Elder Scrolls series, but haven’t quite enjoyed the RPG elements such as character building and customisation, this is definitely the game for you. But, despite taking a different path, this addition still contains many of the elements that the Elder Scrolls series is renowned for: a vast world, lore-laden narrative and compelling characters. So, whether you’re a native or a newcomer to Tamriel, this swashbuckling adventure will keep you captivated to the very end.
  • Thrilling adventure rich with lore, dialogue, backstory and atmosphere
  • Explore the Island of Stros M’kai, from the darkest catacombs to the highest towers
  • Non-linear story progression, allowing you to explore the world at your own pace
  • Put your wits to the test by solving puzzles and uncovering the mystery of Iszara’s disappearance

Fun to have tried

The dialogue - of which there's a ton - oozes with charm, Cyrus is awesome, many characters enjoyable. The story is interesting and lots of Elder Scrolls lore (like the dwemer) got their start here. That being said, this is a really, really bad game. It looks very much like Jedi Knight Dark Forces II, but the draw distance and movement is garbage. The platforming is horrible and just doesn't belong in a 90's PC game. The combat is absolutely awful. It's a true oddity and, but I do recommend getting the game on sale (I got it for $1.79) since it really isn't a game to be played, but more "tried". If you want to see what the game is about I'd recommend the let's play on YouTube by Vazz from 2014. He plays the original version of the game (since the GoG release didn't come until 2015) and you can see that the game really is just as bad as it is on GoG. People claiming the game has "oh so much better frame rate when played on proper hardware" are just lying or suffer from nostalgia.

Question

Does this still run poorly? All the reviews are from 2015.

Broken and buggy

Unless you're a diehard fan who must play all the Elder Scrolls game, better stay away from this one. It's like a cheap Prince of Persia knockoff in 3D, just with a horribly broken game engine meaning you have to save before doing anything in case it decides to bug out. Also, the combat is plain horrible and unfun and a chore to do and best avoided. Best strategy is drink strength and ironskin potions before every fight and just spam attack. At least the game throws health potions at you like crazy, and gold that you have to spend on buying more potions due to the serverly limited carrying capacity of 500 gold at a time. Further, the story is not very good to be honest. Starts out decent, but goes more and more into tripe the further towards the end you get. And most of the characters are plain annoying and/or stupid, including the main character with many having horribly grating voices and mannerisms. So my final score is two stars, because it can be played through mostly fine and can be somewhat enjoyable unlike the abomination that is Battlespire.

TRY BEFORE YOU BUY

This game is good but buggy as hell. My save game got corrupted about 3/4 into the game. Finish your playthrough before buying or GOG wont issue a refund and you'll be shit out of luck.
