Description
The year is 864 and Tiber Septim has begun his crusade to establish an empire in Tamriel, conquering all who stand in his wake. Though the Redguards of Hammerfell put up a valiant fight, they eventually crumbled to internal mutiny and the might of the Septim forces. Now under Imperial control, the Redguards are kept in line by the oppressive rule of Septim’s retainer, Amiel Richton. It is within this setting that Cyrus, a Redguard mercenary that has travelled Tamriel for over a decade, begins his adventure. Investigating the disappearance of his sister, Iszara, Cyrus is brought back to Hammerfell and thrown into the political intrigue that besets Hammerfell and its inhabitants. In his search for his sister, he must also play his part in this war between the Crowns and the Forebears.

Set 400 years prior to the events of The Elder Scrolls: Arena, Redguard contrasts with the other games in many ways. As a third-person action-adventure game, it removes its RPG gloves and instead focuses on bringing you on an immersive journey through the eyes of Cyrus. If you’ve wanted to try the Elder Scrolls series, but haven’t quite enjoyed the RPG elements such as character building and customisation, this is definitely the game for you. But, despite taking a different path, this addition still contains many of the elements that the Elder Scrolls series is renowned for: a vast world, lore-laden narrative and compelling characters. So, whether you’re a native or a newcomer to Tamriel, this swashbuckling adventure will keep you captivated to the very end.
  • Thrilling adventure rich with lore, dialogue, backstory and atmosphere
  • Explore the Island of Stros M’kai, from the darkest catacombs to the highest towers
  • Non-linear story progression, allowing you to explore the world at your own pace
  • Put your wits to the test by solving puzzles and uncovering the mystery of Iszara’s disappearance

Excellent ADVENTURE

Make no mistake: this game is a third person adventure game and not an RPG. However: this is one of the best tps 3d adventures I have ever played. - The story is excellent, and fits well in the Elder Scrolls lore. - The balance between swashbuckling, jumping and puzzling is spot on. This is truly an action adventure (Think of the earlier Tomb Raider games, minus the punishing difficulty and much more intellectual puzzles) - The puzzles are generally good and there is one puzzle that is true gaming history: the Scarab Puzzle. Once you get there, you'll know what I mean ;) - The scenery is varied and open and you can roam nearly anywhere (Think of the sci-fi game Outcast) - The music is very good. The original had red book audio, and the main theme captures the high adventure perfectly. Sad, that it was done with a cheap synth, else it would be John Williams (of Indiana Jones fame) quality. Yes, it's that good. One thing though: if you find the swashbuckling too hard, the game control scripts are simple text files and you can cheat easily by altering your sword damage to a one-hit kill.... so that if your reflexes are not that stellar, you can still enjoy the game.

Download Daggerfall Unity

https://www.dfworkshop.net/ Download this with Redguard, it fixes all issues, adds a bunch of new content, gives a massive graphics overhaul and fixes bugs. All negative reviews are now irrelevant.

Important absences spoil the release...

Redguard is not an RPG, and as such is often treated as fairly unimportant in the Elder Scrolls series. In fact, it is one of the most crucial games in the series, marking the point when the TES world finally came into its own, abandoning its "generic AD&D fantasy" roots. Somewhere between Daggerfall and Redguard, a vast amount of world-building took place, and Redguard is the point when this world was finally presented to the audience in full glory. However... the presentation did not take place in the game, but in the additional materials that accompanied the package, and which are sadly not included here. Redguard included three key items in the box. The first of these was The Pocket Guide to the Empire - a 46-page document presenting a geographic and historical summary of Tamriel from an in-universe perspective. It's a fantastic document also because it's the point when we see the developers abandon talking about their world, and instead they let the world do the talking: from this point onwards, most sources providing any new information about the TES world would be written from the perspective of a character in that world, and often the same information would be presented from multiple perspectives and biases. Sadly, this guide is not included in the package. The second key item was a map of Stros M'Kai - the first time the a paper map was supplied with an Elder Scrolls game. Not super-significant, but still noteworthy. Again, not included in the package. The final key item was a comic, which as I understand was included in the earliest edition of the game (I've never actually seen it in its original printed form), and which presented the backstory to the game, again doing a lot of fantastic world-building. Again, missing. Without these items, Redguard is simply an enjoyable, but unimportant TPP action-adventure game. Its true significance, however, is obscured. A real pity!

Works in 2023

Playing in April 2023, Windows 11, high-end system. The game works fine for me. Just wanted to add this in since many of the older reviews talk about the game not running properly.

Performance in 2019

so, this is my review to show how this game performs in 2019, because a lot of the reviews from 2015 stated a lot of performance issues. My setup is as follows: CPU: I5-7500 3.40 GHZ, RAM: 16 GB, GPU: GTX 1060 6GB. With this setup, the game runs acceptable for me. You can see some hiccups in performance here and there, but the overall experience is certainly playable for me. The only thing that I did change was manually put V-Sync on in the Nvidia control panel to eliminate some screen tearing, but text can only convey so much, that's why I included a link to some footage of the game I captured so you can decide for yourself if you think the game is playing OK or not. link: https://youtu.be/C8dw4tOa-aQ. I hope you can at least enjoy this game in a good state.
