Description

  • A Pulp Adventure Thriller from the minds that brought you Peridium and Crawl.
  • An engrossing roller-coaster of a story- Drawing on King, Crichton and Carpenter, with a dash of 70s Aussie grindhouse.
  • Point 'n Click or Controller- Unique twin-stick controls make The Drifter as comfy to play on the couch as at your PC.
  • Bursting with raw crunchy pixel art and high-impact animation.
  • Professionally voice acted, with a brooding dark-synth cinematic score.

Mick Carter's been drifting a while now- moving from job to job, never staying one place long. Jumping a box-car to his old home town, he witnesses a violent murder, is pursued by hi-tech soldiers, thrown in a reservoir and drowned.

And that's just the start of Mick's problems.

His consciousness ripped away, thrust back into his own body seconds before his death...

Framed for the killing he witnessed, tormented by his own past, and haunted by the feeling that something followed him back from the other side...

Follow Mick as he's sucked headfirst into a lunatic web of shadowy corporations, murder, and the thousand-year obsession of a madman.

The Drifter is our take on a classic 2d point and click adventure, with the brake-lines cut. The focus is on fast-paced storytelling, with puzzle-solving being the glue that ties it together. Mick's a practical guy, and so puzzles are down-to-earth too, designed to be unobtrusive, and give an investigative feel.

We're keeping the pacing quick and lean, you'll never be wandering around lost or confused- Mick is propelled through the story at a good clip, from one situation to another, with barely a moment to catch his breath. One minute you'll be crafting a Molotov cocktail from a bottle of over-proof rum, the next interrogating a crooked neurosurgeon before swinging from a high-rise window by a fraying extension lead.

Absolutely fantastic!

One absolutely fantastic adventure game. From the pixel art with dynamic lighting, to the voice acting and noir voiceovers to the amazing plot and plot twists! You must give this a go

Not without fault, still one of the best

In my experience, modern adventure games that try to invoke and emulate the classics from back in the day - your LucasArts, your Sierras - tend to miss the point. Yes, we loved those games and nostalgia runs strong. But let's not forget that a lot of what made these late-80ies and early-90ies games "old-school" was down to actual technical limitations of those days. And then there is another problem, almost a pet peeve of mine by this point: The tedency to go completely off the rails while trying to tell a serious, "grown-up" story. The Drifter succesfully avoids the former. It's a game that appears to be old-school but feels pleasantly modern, with some nice quality-of-life touches to that traditional adventure formula. It does jump the shark a bit, story-wise. And I don't mean the sci fi-elements - those are fine. But you need to take care to never compromise the motivation or intelligence of your characters. And, well, not to spoil anything. But there is a moment, shortly after the halfway point, where I wanted to reach into the monitor and slap some common sense into the guys. Good thing then that The Drifter's other qualities make it so easy to forgive this faux pas: The already mentioned modern design choices, the slick art and synth-beats, a thrilling mystery and a brisk - almost cinematic - pacing. All good stuff! One of the best adventures in recent memory.

Fantastic

A homage to the games of old! And yet, much improved. Almost every screen has slight lighting effects, far better than I saw before this. The shader-effect applied also makes the pixel-art easy to watch for hours. The story - much gloomier than most older adventures, it feels "grown up". Nice twists and for the most part believable characters. It seems extremely well polished, I found a few smaller issues with mouse-overs hinting for things that did not yet happen. But other than that - very good. It's not a very difficult adventure, but the puzzles are believable, not "throw random stuff together" - and not easy either.

Polished Product

Game is good, impressive visual style, no moon logic. But it feels more like a well-made mid-budget Hollywood film than an indie cult classic.

Moody pointer/Clicker

I love the genre so might be biast, but this one was one of the better ones I have played this year and could be a favorite. Spot on voice acting and writing with a interesting premise, eventhough it is a little bit cliché and derivative. It still sticks the landing and is enjoyable for the low price. WELL WORTH A PICKUP
