Filmed in the 1970s, The Deadly Tower of Monsters is an action-packed adventure, full of time-honored literary themes: the daughter versus the tyrant father, the planet full of innocent ape-creatures, the dashing space-age liberator, the robot companion, the tower full of treacherous mutations... A timeless classic for all ages!
Despite the film's low budget, director Dan Smith was able to craft an engrossing story about strange alien beings and titan-size monsters (sometimes filming without a script!). It is a thrill ride overflowing with elaborate weaponry, eye-catching special effects, lots of technological noises, and of course: plenty of explosions! For the first time in decades, this tour de force is coming to DVD, so a new generation can experience this sci-fi cult classic.
Laugh-a-minute director commentary! – Director Dan Smith lends his decades of industry know-how to deliver side-splitting anecdotes and insights on the film's production. You won't want to miss a single syllable from the genius mind behind this masterpiece!
Got vertigo? Too bad! – Experience the awesome verticality of the tower at every step of the journey, with wide-angle camera shots and impressive aerial stunts. Watch as our heroes fearlessly dive off the tower or glide effortlessly across chasms, all in search of hidden secrets and intergalactic glory!
Over half-a-hundred imaginative monsters! – Squid people, nukular ants, dinosaurs-gone-wild, giant blobs, robo-monkeys, and more are brought to life using state-of-the-art effects, including stop-motion, rotoscope, image compositing, and even some elaborate costumes covered in real fur! You and the family are guaranteed a good ol' time!
Ray guns, crystal swords, and laser whips. Oh, my! – At the heroes' disposal are a wide variety of weapons used to smack!, pow!, and ker-splat! their futuristic foes. Watch as our plucky protagonists collect hidden scrap metal pieces and upgrade their arsenal, right before your very eyes!
Did someone say, "Special powers"!? – I sure hope so, because this film's got 'em! From time-slowing vortexes to speed boots... Wait, what's that on the ground? Is that a bird? No, it's a land mine! These aliens are in for a bang, and so are you!
A candy level game with a flow of about 4 hours that will give you a fun half day.
Although it may have a single gameplay and a slightly tedious flow, he's short! The reversal at the end is pretty funny though.
Recommended for every fan of 50s-70s schlock. The Deadly Tower of Monsters is not that amazing of a game, but it is very unique, has amazing visuals and audio while also featuring amusing commentary by the 'director' of the imaginary movie.
The game's biggest innovation is probably the eponymous tower, which is a continuous structure and can be jumped off at any time (encouraged to find secret areas, collectibles and powerups). Other than that it is a decent action game that will keep you entertained for 5-6 hours, if you are able to forgive its slightly clunky controls and isometric-view platforming.
This game's primary selling point is its ability to sell the experience as director commentary on an old B-Move being remastered for DVD release. It does that extremely well, and everything else competently enough.
The storyline is a self deprecating, fourth wall breaking 1970s era sci-fi movie claptrap that serves as a paper thin veil to throw as many monsters at the screen as the fictional budget allows, but the story itself is just a canvas for the director commentary which sees the director talk about how much of a visionary he is, how his terrible employment practices were TOO fair when you thought about it, and how his actors were egomaniacal talentless hacks.
The graphics at first blush look "off", but that's because the live actors are animated in a manner while the monsters are animated to look like they're stop-motion movie props which is a nice touch. Trees have a silky smooth sheen to them because they're plastic props, and when the actor destroys giant boulders they deflate like balloons. They did a great job selling the experience.
As for everything else, it's fine but not great. The gameplay is smooth but simplistic and easy, and it largely serves as a way to engage the player without getting in the way of the rest of the experience. If that's a fair trade-off for you then it will be right up your alley.
