    Change is inevitable

Experience a macabre, short-form, second-person indie, you play as The Dark Queen of Mortholme, the final barrier between the Hero and the end credits.

In this fixed-screen pixel art game, use the Queen's attacks against this hero, slay them, and quell this nuisance once and for all.

But, wait. How is this possible? The Hero keeps coming back.

    Multiple Endings

Depending on your dialogue choices, the story will play out differently. Will you see the Hero's point of view, or continue ruling as the Queen Everlasting?

Interesting... wait for a good discount

The game is short. There is a bunch of dialog options that are interesting, but that ultimately don't really lead anywhere that I could discern in the 3-4 playthroughs I had. Everything converges to the same ending pretty much. The hero has some AI improvements after each loss, but it also feels like she cheats getting immunity to certain hits towards the end which feels like a cop out somewhat. I read online that there is a way to 'win', but I found the villain's fighting arsenal too rigid (she has long follow-throughs, plus the hit window to cause damage to the hero with various moves gets very small and finicky) and the scene between battles (you must walk to the hero's body and then back to your throne and then wait a bit for the hero to come back) too long to be worth my while. Storywise, the hero raises a valid point about the need to evolve and change (in contrast with the queen's static nature), but I think the moral stance of the hero is cheapened by two things: - The hero fails to recognize that her philosophy of constantly improving until she makes it only works in her particular situation because she cannot die. It gets a little annoying that she performs so much moral posturing about the superiority of her outlook when in fact her success is attributable to that supernatural ability to begin with. - By insisting that they both need to fight until the very end no matter what, the heroes is actually not living up to her own philosophy in the most meaningful way possible. She changes and adapts only within the confines of her rigid outlook. Regardless, the perspective playing the final boss was interesting and the dialog interesting to follow for a bit even if the ultimate takeaways felt a bit flat for me. The action was intriguing at first if ultimately a bit stiff for my liking. I would have loved seen an acceleration to the body/throne walk + hero return scene between fights too. Overall, worthwhile experience for the novelty, but get it on sale.

    Short and Interesting

It's about a half hour long. It's an interesting commentary on the challenge of videogames and eventually, overcoming the final boss. The Dark Queen is the protagonist here. Well worth it.

    Fun But Too Short

Interesting take on player vs boss and the roles we play in the grand scheme of things. It's really cool, however the game is too short but maybe there is more to it than I know so I'll have to play it again.

Good Story but a bit short

The game is all about the story you can witness. You always have two options in regards to what you can say but the outcome does not change in the end, which is in my opinnion a missed oportunity. All in all the game has a interesting story but it is short, like realy short.

A promising start for further refinement

There's some interesting things happening here, but I feel like the entire concept would fare better with further development. The perspective of playing as a final boss is intriguing, the pixel visuals and designs are lovely, and the core premise of not only a repeating battle but also a duel of ideals has a lot of potential. However, I'm left feeling unfulfilled, and a bit frustrated. For one, there's overt contrivances within the game itself to progress its narrative. Namely, the game seems to cheat, imposing some "Okay, you can kill the hero now" threshold in each battle. Plenty of times I saw attacks squarely hit the hero to no effect, until after the hero had done enough damage to the Queen. This further undermined the awkwardly-delivered moral assertion at the heart of the narrative. The hero extolling the power of change feels clunky when the hero enjoys numerous advantages over the queen beyond mere adaptability, including immunity from lasting death. Compounding this is the lack of choice and increasing sense of helplessness by the end of the game. Perhaps if change were a choice the queen was capable of, with endings to match that, then it would make the results of staying rigid feel more organic. As it is though, by the end I feel like I've watched someone beaten up while tied to a chair, all while being preached at, regardless of dialogue choices. That said, I get where the game is *trying* to come from with its message, but it just feels like it needs more work to land the delivery. Which circles back to my overall impression of the game: that it does some things quite well and has a lot of potential in its concepts and assets, but doesn't have the time or space to properly explore them. I understand its meant to be a short-form experience, and short-form games can absolutely work wonderfully, but in this case it feels like it's a handicap. If the game ever receives a notable update/further development, I would happily revisit it.
