In Andergast, whose inhabitants are considered to be notoriously superstitious, King Efferdan awaits a state visit from high-ranking dignitaries. For centuries the kingdom has been at odds with neighboring Nostria, but now first steps are being undertaken toward a lasting peace. But a plague of crows troubles the king, for the birds are acting with unusual aggressiveness, even attacking humans. Moreover, there are those among the citizens of Andergast who swear that the crows are bringing them dark nightmares. As the belligerent creatures infiltrate even the castle itself, the king seeks a skilled bird catcher - an opportunity for young Geron to prove that the reputation for ill luck that has followed him since childhood is undeserved. Following an audience with the king, the prestigious task is assigned to him. However, not only does his task prove unexpectedly difficult, but it also turns out to be the first step of the greatest adventure of his life, which will lead him to the borders of the charted lands of Aventuria and beyond.
With a history of more than 25 years, The Dark Eye is one of Europe's best-known role-playing brands. In addition to the popular pen & paper adventures, TDE has also inspired a series of successful computer games. The Dark Eye: Chains of Satinav takes you deep into the world of Aventuria, where you’ll take on the role of young Geron and get caught up in a mysterious plot that threatens to wipe out the kingdom of Andergast, a back-water realm in the northwest of Aventuria.
Experience the world of The Dark Eye as a classic point-and-click adventure!
A breathtaking art style that shows every nuance of Aventuria.
Solve a variety of side quests each with different paths towards a solution.
You are given an idiot hero and a stupid companion and are then forced to take everyting that isn't nailed down and "apply" these items to others. Who would think to apply a hammer to a door to make a plank so that you can rescue your useless companion? And so it goes for every item - some blindingl obvious some of which would require a few quarts of alcohol to stumble upon.
Bah humbug!
Techinically, the game plays ok, but it has litte to no relation to the Dark Eye (DSA) role playing world and its atmosphere. Instead, it is like any other fairy tale style adventure. Quite disappointing for DSA enthusiasts.
I've bought it to relax a bit and I expected it to be just a title for 2–3 hours and uninstall it. However, it got me and I finish it, which is a rare event for me nowadays.
My two favorite game genres are adventure games and RPG's, and having enjoyed most other Aventuria/Arkania-based games before I thought that this mix should fit me perfectly. But alas, I find this game to be unplayable. The graphics are great, the animation might be sub par, but that doesn't bother me in an adventure game. But the story is just so... random. And uninteresting. The characters are just so horribly clichéd and un-engaging, and the voice acting is even worse.
The game takes itself and its story very seriously, which is generally not a good idea in an adventure game. Combine that with the bad characters, story and voice acting and you're left with that joyless feeling that you get from certain bad movies. There are bad movies that "know" they are bad and run with it, then there are movies that are horrible but "think" they are good. Both those things can be hilarious. This is a third option. This is like a movie that believes itself to be good, but is in fact bland and uninteresting, which just doesn't work on any level.
There are some redeeming qualities. The graphics, as mentioned, and also the puzzles are decent. Maybe the german acting was better - I sure hope so - in which case this might even be a half decent game. In English, I just can't stand it.
