Siedler-Clone which plays like a beta

The longer I play the game, the more it feels like an unfinished beta (V. 1 24661) It is a 'Settlers'-Clone with decent graphics and somewhat simplified gameplay (no population management - you just print your robots). The goal is to gather and convert various resources, research new technologies and either build a monument or vanquish your enemy. There is an exploration part involved which is entertaining, and it is fun to become bigger and better. It also is cute to look at your robots doing your bidding - BUT: A big part of 'settlers' is to optimize your resource tree - placing buildings in a most efficient manner. The problem with 'The Colonists' is the pathfinding: the game doesn't fetch the nearest / most convenient resource, instead it can happen that the log is being fetched from the other end of the map, while the one being manufactured right next door goes - you guess right - where the first one came from. That leads to some peculiar transportation stuff - bot delivers energy to waypoint, just to fetch some right back. Equally annoying are the (resulting) roadblocks. Each roadpost (waypoint) can accomodate 4 resources, so your roads get easily jammed. If the block is from both ways (yes, that can happen), it never dissolves - bye bye resources. When you alter a trade route or unplan a building, those cute white bots ditch the cargo. Furthermore (just one more for now) your bots don't look for alternative ways - always picking the shortest pathway. So having an intricate network of paths hurts more than it helps. There is more: graphical glitches, bots ignoring storage (unlike settlers you don't have a castle / warehouse but have to manage output / storage, which is a fun aspect, when it works), a not ending mission 6 and so on (i found a page full) leading me to believe I played a beta. TL,DR: cute little game, could be more fun if it wasn't so frustrating. I'd wait for a patch or a sale.

Good old times...with robots

Basically the game is like "The settlers". But it is in some points a refined version, e.g. connecting the buildings to roads. If you like watching small robots move around and working and building, this is your game. The one star missing is due to the sterile graphics and the menus, wich are a bit confusing in the beginning (but the tutorial is very good) But in the end, this is great "settlers"-clone with fast graphics, no bugs so far and a good price.

Used to be great, combat is imbalanced

I've been playing this game for ages. It used to be a fun village builder. The combat system is messed up. Even on Casual, the AI seems unbeatable. Not at all "casual". There's probably a single-path solution, like a puzzle, but single-solution and combat really don't mix. Come to think of it, getting to gold on the non-combat scenarios has similar single-path solutions, so it's really unlike most other builder games.

A Well done Village Builder

Been playing this a lot recently and I think it is pretty underrated. Taking it's ques from Settlers, it is in a way, a spiritual squeal. Now a "spiritual squeal" can easily just be a rip off, but there is enough new ideas here to really set this apart, yet still have it appeal to the gamer that really liked those old settlers games. The game’s theme is actually pretty abstracted. There are scifi elements in the setup story and even though you are looking at little robots, the game could really could have any theme applied. The scifi aesthetic is just a cute artistic choice. The game is focused on a level based campaign, again think Settlers. There combat in this game as a kind of tower defense subgame occurs on the outer borders between villages. The goal is to destroy their outpost and build your own, thus reducing their territory and expanding your own. This is not a RTS though, and while the combat is amusing and fun, it is not engrossing or particularly difficult. It is really just an addition layer to the tasks you are manageing. The rest of the gameplay is standard production pipelines and unit happiness management. You research technology to build more complex buildings, gain access to more base materials and the creation of items from those resources. I think one of the things I like the most in the innovative pathing system. Much of the game is based around how you handle the paths. Each road has nodes, and between them is a little carry robot guy. They transport goods from one node to the other, but only those two nodes. There is a 2nd style of road called a path that act more like traditional roads in a city builder. It is a interesting puzzle and probably most importantly behaves exactly how it should. This isn't PlanetBase where you are yelling at your sims for dying of starvation when there is 500 tons of food in storage. All in all this is a great game imo and well worth your time! VERDICT : AWESOME

Cute, but limited

This is like settlers 2, but with robots. The bots themselves look like the offspring of EVA and WALLEE, while the gameplay is so close to S2, it's easy to pick up if you've played that game. The sea trade works well, the game mecahnics are fine, and it will take you a few days to get through all the levels. It's certainly value for money. The graphics are blocky and smooth, which makes identifying everything very easy. What it lacks is replayability. There are no random maps, though you can replay any of the 14 [or is it 15] maps in the game. I prefer to play without enemies, but the map settings, unlike S2, don't allow that. It's also frustrating to have to re-discover advances on each map. REALLY frustrating. Good, clean, enjoyable way to spend time, but not much depth. More depth would give it four stars.
