Good, but not great.

I don't want to be rude, only fair in my review.I know this is a free game, but as a token of my respect to the Devs I have to judge it like normal games.Probably many gamers have been misled by nostalgia. And I am a huge fan of the Gothic games. This game has many strong points:the world is really beautiful, the exploration is deep, the town of Archolos is fascinating, and the plot is generally good. Some charactes are really charismatic(Big Ben, Lorenzo, Garos etc). The graphics are old, but it's not a problem, works fine for me.The combat system is the same as the old Gothics and this is positive. On the contrary, the game has many problems, and I am astonished because no one has underlined them. For example: 1)The amount of fetch quests especially in the first 2 chapters is unbearable.''Bring 5 pieces of meat to X''''Kill 6 boars and retrieve the pelts''etc. Literally DOZENS of them. And the amount of gold and XP you gain from them is abysmal.A total waste of time, and yet you MUST go because you desperately need gold and experience. 2)The looting(which was one of the pillars of the first Gothic)is a joke. Almost the 90% of the loot is junk:sell it to the merchants and you gain nothing.1 gold coin for a wolf pelt? It's less than the cost of the arrows you need to take him down, this is ridicolous. To rack up the gold for the abilities you are forced to do EVERY single quest,so we return to the point 1 3)The backtracking is atrocious.Especially in the quests in the town:''Speak with A in the old town then with B in the prison, come back to the centre to update the quest giver, then go to the harbour to find C who knows something but he doesn't,so you come back to the center blah blah''.I was exhausted, in many moments it's more a job than a game. These are the worst aspects, but i could enumerate other problems, including some freezing bugs.I respect this game, but don't consider it as a masterpiece because it's only a good game.I had some fun in playing it,but that's all.

That Rare Sequel That's Even Better

Strongly recommended for fans of Gothic 2. Kudos to this development team. They kept everything good about Gothic 2, tweaked some of the game play mechanics for the better, and extended the crafting systems. The open world map of Archolos is superb, a joy to explore. Best of all, the story telling is taken up to a higher level with a very personal and compelling plot, more and better dialog and and a couple dozen fully developed NPCs, all unfolding using the same 6 chapter formula of Gothic 2. I've played a lot of medievel fantasy RPG's and this took a place in my top five.

Hits all the right notes...

Finished the game - and I'm in awe of what this team of modders managed to achieve. The game follows the formula set forth by Gothic 1 and 2 and executes it astonishingly well. The initial struggle and the feeling of conquering the world bit by bit - it's all there, wrapped around, in my opinion, an intriquing story. Polish voiceover in combination with english subtitles worked very well for me. The voiceover is of very high quality, considering this is a mod. The translation can be a little bit strange sounding here and there, but overall also of high quality. I would 100% recommend this to anyone!

It's not a mod. It's a game.

65 hours and... oh boy, one more playthrough is already going. Need to check the mage build, but that's not a review. At first I was kinda expecting something like: ah another mod for Gothic 2, probably they will only make small changes to gameplay, create new map and that's it. I was never been so wrong in my entire life. First: world. God damn! Really big island with its own story, politics, problems and history. Everything makes sense and reading through ingame history book was more interesting than current news. It feels alive, full and changes that are happening accrodingly to your decisions are just mindblowing. And the dynamic events are just gold! Second: Plot. At times kinda predictible but still fun as hell. The way everything connects to everything is just outstanding. If you want to properly explore the story you will need at least 2 playthroughs just to check alternative decisions. Third: Characters. This is how it's done! Intresting, with their own background and motivations. I really want to see this attention to detail in modern AAA games. Mechanics: This is something for the devs: you got 120% out of gothic engine. I was not aware how good Piranhas made their engine and what you've done with it. Crafting - excellent, Cutscenes - master level, dynamic events - great, interaction with world - above the scale. Really good job on this! Last word: Leave your Skyrims, Fallouts and other modern RPGs and jump to Archolos. 10/10

German gem with Polish polish

An amazing new experience in the original Gothic spirit. I can't imagine a Gothic fan who would not like this game. After finishing the game for the first time, I noticed a few small problems of technical nature - voice lines were sometimes delayed or played two at the same time :) There were a few crashes (save often ;)) and sometimes there was "falling" sound effect in an area. Two or three times there was lag, probably due to demanding scene... But they didn't really break the game or prevented me from continuing in the same way I intended after a reload (in case of crash). Otherwise, I can only praise the achievement of the creators. Graphics is as might be expected of the original Gothic engine, however new items look great and fit together nicely. There is enough nods to the original item visuals and still a good amount of new things to admire. The environment is great and some nice views can be observed via exploration. Sound is very much in line with Gothic games. I couldn't even notice which tracks were original and which were from Gothic games. Gameplay is as improved as the engine enables it. The overall game system is kept with many new mechanics - crafting, cooking, equipment set and bonuses, effects. Stat management is improved to a great effect. The best part for me is the story and the world itself. Atmosphere is created masterfully, the world is beautiful, but harsh and uncaring towards a random nobody off a ship. Danger lurks at every step, but exploration is very satisfying with much nice loot to be found. Quests don't feel tedious even after 100 hours, very likey due to cliche fetch or go-kill quests. They are present, but meaningful and well placed. Others are engaging and interesting, where player needs to investigate, think and decide. Decisions play a role and even affect the main story a bit, presented at the end. There were nice twists and characters. Overall, I can only recommend and lamet limit on character count in this review :D
