After spending over 70 hours on it I just finished Archolos. I am staggered by how amazing this game is -- yes, a game. This is definitely not "just a mod" as some morons put it. This game is bigger and better than the original G2NotR ever was and it is everything that Gothic 3 should have been. It's not canon, I know, but the story will always be canon tome, personally, from now on. Meeting the characters from the original games again was a fantastic experience. The references to the original games, and to other amazing games, like Skyrim or Witcher were most enjoyable to note. The twists and turns of the story kept me engaged emotionally every minute spent on the main storyline. The dialogs and quest design is stellar and the developers of Skyrim and Witcher, as well as many other amazing RPGs could learn a lot from the dev team of Archolos.
Many people all over the internet ask if it's worth it to play it and I get it -- many people are distrustful towards mods and rightfully so. But this is nothing like most other mods. The bugs are few and far between and as long as you keep a couple additional saves a few minutes apart you will never be in danger of ruining your game and wasting your time -- the main quest seems especially well playtested. If you are a fan of Gothic or of RPGs or of great games in general -- yes, I'll say it again, games -- do yourself a favour and play this masterpiece.
I've played for nearly 40 hours and I'm still in the second chapter - this modification is like a whole new Gothic addicting adventure. The world is climatic, dialogues are really good, the plot is immersive and lets you enjoy every quest and exploration. You play it and can't stop, because of a unique atmosphere and enjoyable gameplay. It's like a Gothic 2 with a new better mechanics like cooking and weapons-crafting, new potions to make etc. Polish dubbing is also on a very high level and music is just perfect and reminds me all the best tracks from Gothic 1, 2 or 3.
If you haven't played yet and you're a big Gothic fan, you should give it a try and get back to a Gothic world with a new character and a new island to explore!
This is professionally done and could hold as a standalone game. It's a love letter to the first two games. TCoM: Archolos plays as Gothic 2 but with many improvements and QoL changes. It has all blueprints of the Piranha Bytes games (story divided into chapters, factions, slow but rewarding progress, strong creatures serving as a barrier in the world...) but it's also inspired by the Witcher series in some aspects.
The story is very down to ground. You start as in immigrant fleeing from the war and want to start a new life. And eventually you become invincible god, the only man in the entire world who has to possess mighty artifact and fight Beliar himself... No, I'm kidding. Your role on Archolos grows bigger as the game progresses, but the plot remains more personal than in other Gothic entries. And I liked it.
I applaud The Chronicles Of Myrtana Team. They succeeded in paying homage to the originals and also improving them (in my opinion). The only downfall is the ancient engine that was pushed to its limits.
It's like a journey to childhood. Great atmosphere and much fun. The only thing I would critizise a bit are some dialogues (Polish). Some lines sound just strange and unnatural, but mothing too serious. Absolutely awesome free mod. Many thanks to developers.
On the start I want to say Gothic 2 with the expansion is my favourite game of all time, NOTR is probably one of the best expansions that was ever created.
In my time of playing RPGs there wasn't really anything like Gothic, the world isn't the biggest, but it is packed with so many things, it is dense and exploration is rewarded on every step.
Game is hard, but for the most part it is fair and you can trick it to your own advantage.
Dialogs are some of the best world have ever seen in the RPG game, yes you are a hero, but you don't give a damn.
You can literally kill everybody, ally with anyone, multiple ways to complete the quests in such a unique and fascinating way.
You could imagine how overjoyed I was when I heard that this mod was launched and was greated with such overwhelmingly positive response.
Developers understand what did the main game so magical, they recognize that this is something special.
World is big, but not too big, it is dense, packed with flavor, exploration is rewarding, dubbing is excellent, quests, more mechanics.
This really should be sold as a standalone pack and I would gladly pay for it and play to the death.
I applaud people working on this, because they made me play this rather than some other AAA titles that I have in queue.
Bravo!
